'78 GL1000 Interstate Saddlebags?

#1

Post by Stealth126 »

Some of you guys may have seen one of my 25 questions I've posted on the forum. I've got my bike running really good. A few quirks to work out but I'm hoping to make it to next fall before any more serious wrenching. This is my first bike and I love it naked. I'm from Michigan and my dad and I are planning a fall trip up to Mackinaw. I'm thinking I would like to add bags for a trip like that but normally I would like to keep it naked. I found a set of bags off a 1980 Interstate. Could I make that fit my 78? Okay. So I know it's possible but how hard would it be? Worth the trouble for temporary? Opinions?

There are Bates and Vetter bags that show up on Marketplace and the For Sale sections of forums regularly. They are set up and have frames for GL1000s. I have given away three sets myself. Post a Wanted post and maybe someone on here hasn't set thiers at the curb yet. I personally prefer just a rack on the back that I can bungee a bag to.

Forgive my ignorance but to clarify will the mounting brackets all have the ability to fit a 78? Or I will have to find a set that specifically came off a 78?

i don't think so but you might be able to modify / add to the brackets. Or rig something up.

I have a 78 and I have those bags and brackets but never tried....
I might have another look now.

I’ve got a set of Bates bags...(and trunk!) that would certainly fit your 78, as the brackets were sort of a generic fit type deal. No idea where you are located.

I think he mentioned Michigan. Most bags come with or have available GL1000 mounts or generic mounts. There were Hondaline GL1000 bags available in '79 I believe.
