'86 GL1200i front end replacement

#1

Post by CalGarnham »

Hey all,
I'm working on stripping down my old wing (1986 1200 interstate) to almost naked (just leaving the left and right panniers but nixing all the other fairing and rear luggage). Are there any front end setups from other bikes that I should consider looking around my local aftermarket shops for, as far as forks etc go? (The previous owner stripped the bolts bare on the forks, and I couldn't dig them out to save my life, so at a minimum those need replaced)

Was also curious about favorite aftermarket instrument clusters and such, and happy for any recommendations and advice in general.

Also pretty new to this sort of project, so if I'm being vague or stupid, I won't be offended at corrections or a need for clarification. XD

Thanks so much!

Welcome to the forum! If you haven’t found it yet, you can stop into the Welcome section and let get to know you!

Just depends on what you really want the bike to do....many consider the 1200 forks to be the best out of the 4 cylinder Wings, and many will put the 1200’s on an earlier bike for better handling.

If you want to get crazy, you can make virtually anything fit. Several of us have Hayabusa front ends on.

Gauges are a personal choice. You will probably get as many answers for that as there is aftermarket gauges. I used an Acewell on my 77.

This is a great forum, and folks are always happy to help. Best of luck on the project! anim-cheers1

My parts diagram shows a mechanical speedometer and electonic tach for the '86 GL1200i. You would probably find it easiesr to get an integrated look by buying an all-electronic unit with both, and using a magnetic pickup on the front wheel or disk to get the speed signal. There are also GPS driven speedos now.

Instruments from a Honda Magna look like they would work, mechanical speedo and electronic tacho. They can be bought cheap too.
