Passenger Pegs and Shift Levers

#1

Post by sphen »

has anyone adapted "normal" passenger pegs (ie not platforms) to gl1200? Aftermarket or used naked 1100/1200 pegs?

also, can someone recommend a good/upgraded shift lever for gl1200?

The thinner style of plain rubber footpegs used by the early GL1000 and early GL1100's could possibly be changed at the flex area of the pinned footpeg mount where it attaches to the frame bracket. I used a set of early 2000's Honda footrests off a cruiser style bike and attached them to a 1976 GL1000 original frame mount brackets for the fronts. The only mod was a small backing plate needed to be welded as a raised stop to decrease the depth of the GL1000's original mounting bracket. The rear footrests on the 1976 GL1000 are off my 1984 GL1200 Standard and were a direct bolt on swap to the GL's factory brackets.

Whats wrong with the shifter? What are you trying to accomplish?

I did as Flying900 suggests. Quite a few Honda of the era were interchangeable for the footrest part.

I think I would like to move mine rearward some, but not sure if I will like the throw-distance of the shifter if extended.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I moved the pegs rearward on my 78, and used a sportbike setup where the shift lever is pivoted on the footpeg .

I didnt fully follow - but it seems you are saying that certain ones would just bolt on to where the stock passenger platform rests bolted in? Without mods? But your setup required welding some brackets?

I removed the stock passenger platforms - can you point me to some standard style pegs that will fit those threads?

The one that came on the bike is bent. I can easily grab an OEM takeoff, but wanted to ask if there's a "cult favorite" aftermarket/upgrade? Possibly a nicer/sturdier one maybe with breakaway tip?

Yes some welding maybe required. Anytime you do something like this, direct bolt ons are usually non existent. Depends on how far back you want to move the pegs. Why do you want to move them back? I'm really too tall for my 1200 to fit confortably. So I moved the seat back, and raised it up about 5 inches, to get a comfortable riding position. This eliminated the need to do anything with the pegs or the shifter, or the handle bars

i don't want to move the operator pegs back, i want to substitute the passenger platform pegs for normal pegs for the passenger (not trying to do rearsets). As part of turning this aspencade naked, i want to ditch those big passenger footrests for standard passenger pegs. Make sense?

those rear pegs in the photo above that flying900 posted is what i'm looking for. that exact setup. So I need to know which pegs to get, and what mods are needed to bolt them on (to an 86 1200).

side note- do you have a photo of the seat you moved back and raised? (or is that it in your avatar)

No picture of the seat. My avatar is of my 78. I basically used fiberglass to make an insert piece that fit between the shelter and the frame to provide a platform for the seat . I think what I understand is that your bike has the platform type foot peg/ floor boards. I would start with the normal foot pegs and shifter, and see how you like that. Floorboards where an aftermarket thing. Came with a heel/toe shifter. Going back to a standard peg and shifter will make a world of difference. As for the passenger pegs, might take some fabrication, but I understand the advantages. I only ride one up on my 1200, so passenger pegs are no big deal
