88 gl1500 build

#1

Post by Toothless92 »

Alright so I found this group in researching my new gl1500 so far I have discovered it is rather difficult to use an 88 gl1500 to do a stripped bobber or cafe bike but nonetheless this is what I want to do and have wanted to do for a long time if anyone has any tips or pointers to help me along in this process I’d very much appreciate it!!

Welcome from Wisconsin. I'm not familiar at all with the 1500's, but I would suggest starting by procuring a good shop manual and detailed wiring diagram. I'm sure a lot of the electrical/electronic stuff could be eliminated, but one needs to have a basic understanding of what works with what before starting to lop off stuff. Good luck, and please start a build thread, as we all like to learn new things!

PedroTQ has a 1500 he’s stripping right now. He could probably make his own from scratch though.

Many pages of head scratching.

I too am working on a GL1500. Not sure where its going or when it will get there but I have been slowly stripping off the stuff that won't be needed. It hasn't run for a while (since before I got it) so that will be one of the first steps. I have given a lot of thought to putting an early VW bug front axle on it and making a rat reverse trike (my wife rides a Spyder). But I am leaning away from that at the moment. One thing is for sure though, there are lots more wires on the 1500 than any of the other GLs I have worked on before. And lots of little black boxes.
Bikes at present:

83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
83 GL in process :IDTS:
