CL ad too good to pass on...

#1

Post by heraldhamster »

so sunnbobb got me into this one Saturday afternoon.
the ad said basically, "1990 GL1500, doesn't run, $700 come & get it."
I'd never seen a true basket Case before. the PO had removed about 85% of the Tupperware and a few other goodies chasing down a no-start issue. then it sat in his garage for months. SWMBO told him get another bike so we can ride. he got a Harley. everybody's happy.
then she told him you got to get rid of the GoldWing cuz it's taking up too much space.
that's where we came in...

it's been sitting at sunnbobb's for about 6 months until this last Saturday when he dropped it off at my place. we rolled into the shop & I spent a few hours tinkering on it when I came across this:
IMG_20190427_184527.jpg
IMG_20190427_184527.jpg (104.8 KiB) Viewed 557 times
which is the set of wires to the coil of the starter solenoid. 2 jumper wires with alligator clips later and all 6 cylinders fired right up and she runs SO smoothly.
except there's a coolant leak from the right side head... somewhere.
here's to hoping it's just a head gasket.

it has the electric reverse, cruise control, & other bells and whistles I won't need to finally, finally build my reverse trike.

I know, I know, I hear the groans from here.
but this is a 30+ year project for me.

oh, forgot to mention I had to reassemble the filter housing, et al. to the carbs before firing.
I have a shop manual on my phone but I puzzled it out without too much research. a couple of those hoses are hard to get to (understatement). one requires removing the starboard side radiator cooling fan...
mmm, twin radiators.

my body style is going to be dramatically different and I'm using the GL1500 versus the KZ1000 they used on the original prototype.

The YouTube videos on their page are top notch!   Felt like I had traveled back in time, especially with the news broadcast one.

The concept for the project looks like a great alternative to a sidecar - no offense to the sidecar aficionados out there, as I have a soft spot for those rigs as well. A three wheeled mini sports car seems like a ridiculously fun proposition, kind of like having a road worthy go kart to putz around on.

I was wondering, could one use the front end plans to create a Can-Am Spyder style of Gold Wing? I don't think I've ever seen a Gold Wing reverse trike conversion that actually looked natural. With grafting on a front end, it'd be possible to make something that looked better.

My idea is completely hypothetical of course and I'll never get to it myself, but it seems like a reasonable idea.

Best of luck on the project! I look forward to seeing updates on this radical Wing.

Disregard on my question, I think. After looking at a few other reverse trike kit cars, I realize that from the engine on back is in an "engine compartment" and everything in front of that is where the fabrication work comes into play; creating a passenger cabin and such.

Looks like my idea of creating a Gold Wing reverse trike that doesn't look like the ugly duckling hitting that awkward teen stage in life will require separate, independent research.

I will say, there are some really slick looking kits across the pond and down under. Most of the complete setups are more than a new Polaris Slingshot, although it could be a blast for the kids to ride in.

When you get that much tupperware off a 1500, it feels like a basket case!

if you mean one of these bad boys, I didn't know they exist until we saw one outside Deadwood on last year's run (sunnbobb in the background). this may not be the Venice, but still a Vanderhall.
I like it, it looks very well thought out from what I can tell w/o opening one up. but open cockpit isn't my preference.

I've been brainstorming this for years. for instance, I wanted to eliminate exterior rear view mirrors so I came up with an idea about using small, rear pointed cameras & color LCD screens inside on the dash... then the industry came along and invented backup cameras. how fortunate for me.
