15, Yes, the seal wasn't in early 75's, and the coupling wore rapidly. They added a zerk and the seal. My seal was missing also, but I snapped one up on ebay. My swing arm was pumped FULL of grease, and took forever to get it all out. I now have the seal, a well-greased coupling and a way to add grease if I wish (will probably take ut apart and re-pack with high-moly).

Remove them and tell the powder coaters to be cautious in that area. If you leave the old ones in the heat will cause the grease to soften and may ooze out. Causing issues with the new powder.

Good powder coaters deal with that situation all the time and most will know where a bearing or race might go and they can mask it off. But telling them works too.

Thanks for all the info guys. Its really helping me a lot.

I removed the swingarm bearings. Was really easy.

Dont have many pics but trying to keep momentum going on the build.

Stripped the glossy black pait of the calipers. Thinking of paining them satin or even flat black vht. Will decide later - need to look at some pics first. Then i used the old master cylinder clamped into a vice to pump out the stuck pistons. I bought new ones with the rebuild kits already. The inside bores needs some cleaning too...

Also started prepping the frame and swingarm for powdercoating. I’m a bit paranoid about the powdercoaters and sandblasters messing up critical areas. So ive taped off things i dont want them to blast. I also used threaded rods and bolts with washers to close off the swing arm pivot points and the bearing locations. Will do the same to the neck of the frame.

Haha. I did the same thing to get my rear pistons out (handlebar in vice and all). Then I learned the grease gun trick and use it now. I'd much rather clean grease than mess more than necessary with brake fluid.

Heya, Nice job mate

I have just been through this process (powdercoating).
I normally use painters mate, and stick it in all the holes on the frame. (it doesn't melt and getting it out afterwards isn't a mission.) as well as the fact it seals the stuff off properly so you don't get sand everywhere.

Also helps that its white , so the blasters can see what not to blast.
For the large swingarm hole i cut a plate out of ally sheeting and just painters mated it in there.


Spokes, they are gonna rust , so best thing (other than new) it to coat em with clear asap (mask off threads).

I bought spokes from Davis Silver for the one i am restoring and they are not too bad price wise, but due to our post office you might wait a few months

Same goes for the Front brake master cylinder , you can buy the bits to keep it original or you can buy a complete MC from David Silver for around the same price

I am building a goldwing bobber as well and bought stainless spokes from Ebay, and they fitted nicely as well, although their durability has still to be tested.

Yeah saw that handlebar, vice method on youtube. Was a bit messy but nothing too bad. I'm currently working in my temporary garage so i didn't mind messing some brake fluid. Will hopefully move to the new garage by the time I'm assembling the bike.

Thunderdome nice to see another saffer here. Any threads on your build? I'm in Gauteng by the way.

I've coated the spokes with a clearcoat so lets see how it holds up. Thanks for the tip on the acrylic. I may just do that. I'm currently deciding where to go for powdercoating. The one shop say they don't sandblast but use a chemical bath instead. Going to check them out tomorrow. The other places say they'll tell the person not to blast/coat where I say not to, but I don't trust them anymore. They always mess up and then you have to deal with their mistakes. So trying to prep as much as I can myself to avoid surprises.

Is always very cool when you get the stuff back from the coaters and its pristine...and makes the building a pleasure.

Possibly things you mighta missed?(i chucked as much as possible for powdercoating as it i just easier)
No battery box?
L angled plate behind the radiator fan?
Top n bottom triple trees? (but make very sure the insides of the triples are not coated as the forks will be a tough job to get back in....ask me how i know this

I havnt put up a build thread yet, been too busy putting her together... its kinda one of those situations where there are thing you have still forgotten to clean and paint which take time,
I have done the polished rims in a clear powdercoat which came out pretty good
I am taking photos must just put the time aside to post

Also i am very interested in seeing how you get the injection working

Thunderdome, battery box is there :) hiding in the false tank cage. Theres also a box of bits behind the front seat (out of sight) with the tripple clamps etc.

I realize now i did forget the rear shocks and springs though. Plan is to convert them to gas. I havent found anything decent locally and importing everything is getting expensive.

I’m deleting the l-plate (keeping the support bars)

Also couldnt get the rear caliper pistons out. Tried the master cylinder method (ran out of patience) and them the grease gun trick, but dont have a small enough nipple to connect to the break hose. Trying to just hold it in by hand produced a mess.

You have about a 1/4 inch from the end of the caliper piston that can be used to twist the pistons to remove. You can grab them with a set of adjustable pliers and twist back and forth. It's best to only use about 1/8 inch from the end of the piston. You ask why, BTDT. Just a suggestion. Good luck.

You seem to have it covered.
Pistons you can also try a compressed air but they come out with a bang!

Rear shocks are a mission to find and the ones from startline are not great(way to stiff) but can work in a pinch.

You guys up there have a bike scrapyard I went to once.... bike hospital I think.... they have a tonne of stuff all over so you can probably get shocks there

Thanks rednaxs. I fed the pistons some release spray throughout yesterday and overnight. Wil have another go today.

Thunderdome I’ll give bike hospital a visit sometime. They are very expensive generally and have cornered the market. Pretty much a monopoly so to speak. But lets see... (ps: do you know any other naked gl owners locally. Besides DGM i need some sort of event/deadline to work towards for the build. How often do they have the woodstock bike show down there?)

Heya, not sure what DGM is? :shock: :shock:
WMC Bikeshow is once a year afaik, i've only been once or twice.

I actually don't know any goldwing owners....I have a couple of old CB750 sohc's and a cbx so the guys i know mostly have those... but the prices of everything is getting crazy so even fairly worn goldwings are now fetching pretty good prices, so not sure any of them are getting wings anytime soon.

Shocks.... mebbe pull yours apart and check the damping, if its still ok you can possibly get the shocks in a passable condition.
I did this with mine as i also couldnt find ones...

I stripped em, soaked the springs in vinegar for a day, washed the rust off, coated in silver spraypaint... wiped it off the chrome with thinners, so the pain remained on the rusted bits and shot with a bit of clear.... hopefully will hold for a while.

Your bike is coming along nicely man. I love the paint on the motor - what is it? And your work area is nice and clean. I'm jealous! I have racecar standing in my "bike garage" at the moment for some work, and my home built bike lift table with jack is currently doing duty as a host/scaffold to install and paint the 4.5m high ceilings of the house. I built a "bolt on" platform for the bike lift as those platform hoists are too expensive to rent on a day-to-day basis. So I have some work to do if I want my garage and bike lift back in time for re-assembly of the GL. haha.

Front mudguard is still stock - I plan to cut it though. Stock exhausts are in decent shape but I don't plan to re-use it. I'll also probably cut the rear fender.
