Nitrous questions

#1

Post by x01660 »

Anyone on here spray?

I've been contemplating performance, and whether or not I should just get myself another 85 GS1150E and stick a 1197 Wiseco kit in it, but I like the comfort and style of the 1000's. But it would be nice to have a bit of go juice when in a straight line.

So who has experience with nitrous? Looking to see what I can expect, how much I should use, what mods I need to do to the engine, etc.

Thanks, guys.

I haven’t run it yet, but my 77 is set up for it. Mine is a 1200 block with 1000 heads and twin Jenveys, so it should have a bit more zip than the original.

I plan to run a small shot with a progressive controller. Once I try it a few times, I will put the turbo on and leave the NOS alone, as it probably won’t take the hit with the turbo on there.

As you may have seen in the thread that was linked, Cyborg likes it, but I don’t know if he uses it anymore other than at shows.

Yeah, a lot of good info there that doesn't need to be repeated. ;)

"How much should I use?" How much money you got?
"what mods I need to do to the engine, etc." Depends on how much you want to use.

Small jets and the right timing adjustments and it will live a long time doing very little. Add maybe 20-30HP. Keep putting in bigger jets and it all starts to add up.

Like the old saying goes. "How much will it cost?" answer=How fast do you want to go.

For me, even an increase of 10-15 HP would be enough. I'm thinking of a litte boost out of a corner, or a roll on drag on the highway. The bike is making 78 HP. A short boost to 90 HP would be enough.

You'll have to forgive my ignorance but I'm not that familiar with the spray.

In my opinion, there's a tool for every job. GLs are good for cruising and long haul, not so much for ghost hotrodding - especially if you don't like being beat up.

There are lots of cheap, faster beaters. I think my 1000 gets it done very well in stock form. One mistake or lean malfunction with NOS will torch a motor.

I go fast with different tools and cruise the GL.

LOL!

That's a Vance and Heins 4 to 1 exhaust. It was for a GS1100 (with dual shocks vs the monoshock on the GS1150), so I had to craft a custom mount.

After some very hard riding (I broke and replaced the frame 3 times  ), the mount broke, and the can fell off and I ran over it.

And since that bike sounded like an F1 car when I was running the header, I needed a simple solution to cut down on the sound.

So a trip to Autozone and a Cherry Bomb and flex exhaust pipe later, instant exhaust!

I was reckless and cheap back in the day. I had that bike at a GPS measured 138 MPH... with those spindly forks... Glad I slowed down...

If all you are looking for is 10-15 hp, a 1200 block with 1000 heads and a set of Weber’s, and you’d probably be there.

True, but I'm also looking for novelty.

The idea of a turbo'd GL or one with spray is appealing because its different and does require maintanence and planning.

All of these ideas are for the roller I have left over from the donor bike I got for its engine to fix Athena

Athena will be stock and reliable.

The next bike will be the crazy one. So I'm exploring options. :)

A set of Webers is pretty novel outside this forum. A 1200 block with 1000 heads and '75 - '77 cams with a pair of 44 IDFs should be good for 100hp (maybe a little over) at the crank. Probably 85hp+ at the wheel. Add some NOS and you will be at 100hp at the rear. If you want true novelty I think Randakk still has a blower for $4K.

A blower would be nice. But for 4k I could get myself a GL1500....
