Re: Red Belly (!)
I have made some progress this week in spite of humidity reaching the high nineties and temps not far behind. I decided to try an epoxy primer and a base/clear on the engine as well as the rest of the painted parts. The manager of my paint store seemed to think I would be alright except for the headers, of course. Time will tell but as I mentioned before, the spray can engine paint hasn't been holding up long term either. (Not outright failure, just fades and easily damaged by oil and other abuse.) I still have quite a bit of painting to do, frame, fairing, side cover as well as tail. Then I switch colors and do the wheels.
Speaking of wheels, any one have a suggestion for cleaning the aluminum wheels (rear 83, front 87) ? I have used soda before but with the high humidity (even with a moisture canister) the soda clumps too much to flow properly. I have a little sandblaster on wheels and was thinking maybe walnut shells might work. I have never tried them before and don't know if they will feed in my system but seems like they would do a good job.

The primer photo looks to be an art exhibit. But as the beholder, maybe I'm a bit partial to the composition and placement of the exhibit.

Re: Red Belly (!)
one way to "soften" a lot of red is to use slightly different shades on different parts. Makes a lot red easier on the eye

Re: Red Belly (!)
Your sandblaster should work with the walnut shell media as long as you have a nozzle that has a large enough bore-size.

Re: Red Belly (!)
I had a box of "glass beads" (really just sand like particles) under the bench so I decided to try them. I just lightly blasted the wheels with the glass and it did a good job of cleaning as well as giving a slight texture for the paint. I then gave them a couple of coats of epoxy primer and followed up with a dark metallic silver and two coats of clear. I like the way they turned out and hope they will be durable.BikeMaine wrote:Your sandblaster should work with the walnut shell media as long as you have a nozzle that has a large enough bore-size.
A year or so ago I bought several "lazy Susan" rotating platforms from Lowes, these have proven very useful for painting all kinds of parts. They are mounted to 1' squares of plywood and can be used on a table, as in this case beneath the wheels or on the floor beneath a pedestal as was the case with the shelter cover.

Re: Red Belly (!)
The bike is starting to go back together, lots of cleaning and painting of small parts. A big part of my time has been going through tubs of parts in the storage building looking for brackets and springs and stuff like that. Still have a bunch of odds and ends to track down. Also found a few parts that will need to be ordered. At the moment I have three bikes on Craigs list for sale and that is hampering my shopping. I think I have enough in the hobby account to order tires so that will at least help it look like a bike instead of a fire pump.
