Reviving a dead 77 Standard

#1

Post by Bear151556a »

So after thinking about it for a year, I have decided that I need to start to redo my 1977. Why this one? The other 2 run, and this one doesn't.

Backstory on it is as follows: My cousin the roofer found this in a shed that he reroofed. After talking to the PO, found it was for sale. Knowing that I seemed to have a strange liking for these machines, he let me know about it.(Beginning to think he don't like me much) So I went and took a look. I have really been wanting a standard for some time, and I was pretty much sold as soon as I saw it, so we dickered and I loaded it up after giving the man his 1400.00.

According to the PO, it was his brother in laws bike, and after he passed on, he rode it for 5-6 years until last year, when he broke down and bought a Electraglide. All it should need, he figured, was a battery and gas. (Yep)

Got it back to the shop, threw a fresh battery in it and a gallon of premium, and gave her a try. NADA! turns over great, but no start. Noticed the gas gauge was not working so I pulled the seat and pulled the sending unit. Which was a solid mass of rust. Looking in the tank thru the hole, I saw that my nice fresh gasoline had mixed with the contents of the tank and had developed a decidedly rust colored hue. So I buttoned it up and let it sit for another year.

So this is how she sits today. Sorry about the horrid quality, my phone takes horrible pics, and I shake.

So, the list.
Compression test( it turns over, so there's that, which is good...)
Clean the tank using electrolysis
Lube up the rear end using high moly grease
Replace the belts
Pull the rack and see how bad the carbs are(Please don't be bad, me and CV carbs have a bad history)
Change the fluids
rebuild the brakes
Cross fingers!

(Joking) You might want to cross your fingers first, lol!
If it's rolling, and the engine turns over freely, you're well on your way. Patience, persistence, and a bit of cash, and she'll be on the road! Enjoy the ride...

Well, did very little on the bike today, I did find out that PO had installed a dyna ignition system, which is a huge plus. But as I was getting ready to head home, the starter on the 85 decided it was done playing the game. In removing it I found that PO had booger welded the lh header to the horseshoe, and when I dropped the exhaust that let go, so now I am going to raid the shiny new exhaust off of the 77 and adapt it for the 1200.

I just think the 1200 was upset about the 1000 getting attention to tell the truth.

While I was there I pulled the removable frame member and checked it. Seems solid, though it did have some rust dust. So figure I will clean that up and seal it up while I am in there.
Update. Got my starter rebuild kit. Opened the old starter, found out that 1 Brush is welded in. No biggie. Opened the other end and found no thrust washers... DB Electric to the rescue! So back to waiting. Update. New starter for the 1200 arrived today! A little bit of wiggling and slid right home! Stolen exhaust on tomorrow, then off to the races on that one.
