gl1100 backfires and one blue exhaust pipe

#1

Post by ronajon »

of my 83 gl1100 i recently had my carbs ultrasonic cleaned and put all back with new gaskets.
now when revving up hard and the letting the throttle go i got a backfire in the left exhaust.

my pilot screws are 3 turns out as it says in the manual

also my right exhaust is blueing, but my left one isn't

is there some other adjustment i forgot to do assembling the carbs again ?

Something is sticking somewhere....

Could be a vacuum slide hanging up

Valve clearance OK? Could have an exhaust a little loose

Timing OK, check vacuum advance for movement.

Vacuum leak somewhere, Intake boot possibly...

Your blueing could be related to one or more of these too, most all chrome pipes change color to some point. Heat speeds up the process alot, so a lean carb will help it along (vacuum leak, back fire here too)

They had to get very hot to turn the pipes blue all the way back. I'm thinking way too much fuel. Enough that it's dumping raw gas into the exhaust and then "firing " it once in there. Thus the "backfire". Have you tried readjusting the mixture screws? Check the valve lash like Oldewing said. If it was a 1000 I'd say check to make sure the timing advance wasn't sticking. Harder to do on an 1100.

How does the bike run? When you did the carbs did you put in new air cutoff valves? Pull all the jets and make sure they are clean?

i also thought about the backfiring due to too much fuel. but the backfiring happens in the left exhaust and the blueing on the right :?:

the mixture screw is 3 turnes out like it was mentioned in the manual. only the air cutoff valves i didn't replace
will do the valve lash first

today i rode with the timing advance disconnected and plugged on the carb side.
at first i seemed that the backfires were gone, but after 10 miles there were backfires again.

a lot less than with the vacuum advance connected, but still ....

should i have a look at the air cutoff valves?
already checked the carb boots for vacuum leak

Only way to look at the air cutoffs on an 1100 is to take the carb rack apart. Did you check all over the carbs for vacuum leaks? Throttle shafts too?

i used brake cleaner to test for vacuum, it seems there is no leak.
guess i'm going to pull the carbs and check the vacuum slides
