It’s getting more interesting.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

As you might already know, the '85 engine used an electronic ignition, which I did not get with the donor bike.
No problem! Umm, problem. But wait! Didn't the earlier gl1000 have a cam with point ignition? and would they fit my heads? Oh, right, the heads. The PO, in his infinite wisdom, had decided to remove and disassemble the heads from the 1200 engine. Had to scour his garage/ barn floor for the parts.
No matter, I had the heads from the '83. They would fit, right? I could check with my favorite forum for the solution to my "issues"! action1
Ericheath to the rescue! (THANKS!)
He suggested that I go with certain parts (cams) and just what to do to make them work. :-D
So I did just that.

Grind out a bit of the pistons with an old intake valve (just to make sure there is sufficient clearance).
Was it necessary? In my mind, yes. Actually, don't care as long as it works. :)

As long as there's enough material under the new relief cut to avoid hotspots and potential failure. I think there are enough folks who have done it here that it seems not to be an issue.

Belts? Got new ones from RockAuto for the grand total of $18.85 for the pair. Gates T070.
Belt covers fitting? Well, I am putting an external alternator (from before), and I am having to trim/grind room for the pulley. The left cover fits like it was made to fit. The left, well, a bit more of a challenge. But, it is just a matter of patience and perseverance. (and a grinder :orange ) It WILL happen. Sorry, no photos yet, work still in progress. Here is a pic of the "adjustment" to the belt guard:

The new hole holds the cover in place while the outer cover bolt holds it all together. Yes, cheap and easy. But so far it works.
Ignition? Dyna to the rescue. Just need to wire it up. Timing setup? Not ready, yet.

Back to the forks. No photos yet, but, I can tell you about these:
274.jpg

Remember earlier I spoke about things from different years fitting other different years? These are earlier headlight mounts (wait, what am I saying? this IS a Goldwing forum! you already know what they are! DUH!)
OK. Right. These are mounted now on my '85 front forks. Did I have to modify them? You betcha! They were too long (up & down) to fit between the air suspension fitting thing and the lower part of the fork tube mount. I cut them just above where the bottom of the tube meets the turn signal mount is spotwelded and then ground out the spotwelds. THEN, i used a large rotary file to "thin" out the lower part to fit the tubes. Sorry, no pix. Oh, and I did have to do it twice because I forgot that pesky air fitting. :IDTS:
Did I mention that I will be using the original gauge setup?
I will be using the original gauge setup. In order to do that, I made a couple tabs that just happen to fit between that pesky air fitting thing and the upper fork tube mount. Again, quick and dirty. Pictures to follow, asap. I promise.

Really, it all looks like it is "supposed" to look.

There is nothing like new tires on a bike. Even if you put them on yourself. In the rain. ;) I put the Shinko 230 Tourmaster tires on the '85 rims. I read the reviews and thought that, well, in my situation, and for the money, they would hopefully be good.
Oh, and that front fender.
It came with some sorta hard plastic mudflap that just had to go! :)

It wraps itself around that tire close enough for these eyes.

Hydraulics. Yes, I am allergic to brake fluid. Makes me itch all over, gives me a headache. :drunk But now I have a hydraulic clutch! No more cable! But wait. Now I need to actually buy something else. Clutch master cylinder/lever/mirror mount. AND the front brake master cylinder/lever/mirror mount to match. AND run the clutch hydraulic line.
Talk about a wrestling match! Bad enough for the front brake hoses to make work.(Non linked now) Got them done too. And as soon as I recover from spending all this money so far, I promise to go for braided lines throughout. Can't wait. :)

Wiring? did somebody mention wires? The only thing that I had to change was to swap the ignition switch wires in the connector since I was going with the '85 ignition switch. (has the original key, AND the helmet holder) :orange
I am using a LED light in the headlight bucket. I like the color as well as the brightness. People "see" it. It also modulates. I like!
Pictures...I know...they will be posted asap.

BTW, the rear shocks are swap meet specials @ $20/pair. They lower the bike just enough and actually still work pretty well. They look like new take-offs.

The 1100 speedometer drive device fits although the cable could be about an inch longer. On the 1100, I always felt that it was always about an inch too long. Say la vee. :IDTS:

Did I mention that overall the bike's wheelbase is about 4" longer than the 1100 that it used to be? Before, along with the external alternator setup, there appeared the possibility/probability that under certain braking conditions, the externally mounted fan would come into contact with the front fender. :( After measuring another 1100, there seems to be an extra inch in that area, thereby possibly eliminating that certain situation. We shall see.
Here are some shots of the gauge cluster etc. Remember, it is all about how it works, right?

As well as the headlight mounting "ears". If you look at the lower part, just above the turn signal mount, you might be able to see the "mod".

Those bars are from a BMWr100. 7/8". Had to buy spacers from Dime City Cycles to fit the bar holders from the '85. They are 1".

The orange paint? I used to have a thing for sailboats (maybe I still do), was a leftover quart that has lead in it. Epoxy paint. I wear a hazmat suit and NIOSH respirator when spraying. :( I use a HVLP gun with adjustable pressure so as not to blast it out, wasting paint. Gotta watch out for too much delivery but man the stuff comes out smooth! It would smooth out with just using a brush! :orange Of course, anything looks good with 20/20 vision!
