Battle axe -79 GL1000 cafe build
So Im selling my BMW k1200lt to fund this gl1000 cafe project. I should have done more research on the BMW as it's all plastic and can't be turned into a cafe racer. picked it up the goldwing for $750. Bonus it has new tires on it. After replacing the solenoid that was wired in backwards it fired right up. So new seat, bars, and led lights are on the way. I also replaced the turn signal diode with an led compatible one. A paint job is in the future. Instead of replacing or cutting the tabs off the turn signal tabs I'm going to mount extra driving lights. I plan on using majic tractor enamel on the frame. There only seems to be rust at the welds. At least thats the plan for now. So far I epoxy painted the headlight shell and enameled the chrome black. I'm still debating on the overall paint scheme. Maybe flat black is easiest. A little od green maybe. Any suggestions are welcome.

Looks like you've got a nice solid bike to start with, and at least a direction you want to go. Have fun!

I'm picking up new belts tonight! Got the lights working today and started epoxy painting parts that come off. I'm not sure how I want to cut the fenders. Maybe an angle grinder.

Re: 79 GL1000 cafe scrambler build
Finished the rear fender,. Ordered a low voltage solenoid to try and get the blinkers to blink. 3rd time is a charm. I'm not sure how much to cut down the front fender. I want to protect the radiator but make it a bit smaller? Brake lines and a new front master cylinder are on Thier way from radnakks. Is there any suggestions for a new guage cluster? Reasonably priced. It doesn't need to be stock. The guages are pretty beat up. I will poke about the forum a bit. I'm sure someone else has done it.

I also have a buddy hooking me up with a pair of rear air shocks off a Harley. We shall see if they fit.

Got it together enough for a quick ride and I ran out of gas 10 minutes from the house. Got a little to excited.

Re: 79 GL1000 cafe scrambler build
So I changed the timing belts, which had to be redone because I was one tooth off the first time. My headers now have a nice rainbow hue to them. Removed the rear pegs all together. The seat ships tomorrow. Changed the final drive oil. Switched out the pegs for cbr1000rr front pegs. Cut down and painted the front fender. For some reason my fuel gauge reads as one fifth full when I’ve only used 2 gallons of gas of the 5 gallons it’s supposed to hold. Is this something that can be fixed? This build is low budget as it started as a $750 non running bike. I also painted the timing covers with black epoxy paint, and the shelter half's and side covers of green. Installed randakks front master cylinder and break lines. Clubman bars with oem Honda grips.

Re: Battle axe -79 GL1000 cafe build
I got the cbr1000rr foot pegs to fit with minimal grinding off the mount. I don't think the brackets are original though.

Re: Battle axe -79 GL1000 cafe build
I painted the forks and touched up some of the spot rust on the frame. I think the forks came out pretty good for not removing them. I wire brushed them, then bare metal primer, and then high temp engine enamel. I think I'm going to start clear coating the parts I like the finish on. Has anyone found anything worked particularly well with flat paint? Flat clear coat?
