Crash7 wrote:So how important is the h connector in the muffler? I could use a little bit mor noise. I think I’m going to slash the ends off and face it away from the bike instead of down just in front of the baffle and wrap the mufflers in black. But I don’t want to jack up the back pressure. Does it need to equalize?
I removed the H from the exhaust. I welded a straight pipe to each header and inserted my home-made baffles and added holes in the baffles until I got my desired level of noise.

Adding gas volume to an exhaust system will result in lessened noise, which is why all new bikes have such large mufflers. Adding an H connector between individual pipes will add gas volume and also balance the pulses, resulting in a possibly more pleasing tone. One of the things we did on cars with dual exhausts in the olden days.
The original '75-'77 horseshoe muffler is just one big can, and was panned sometimes for being "too quiet". Which is why the later bikes got individual mufflers with crossovers, to factory-tune the noise. But they don't really need the crossovers.

A crossover, or balance tube, can very slightly increase low end torque. And quiet the tone some.

Personally I'm not a fan of "noise".

Not a fan of too much noise either, but I do like to be able to still hear the engine at freeway speeds. Thats the noise level I shoot for.

I can only imagine the conversation that took place in the Honda R&D Dept.............

"Hey, what are all these little pieces of pipe for"?
"We are going to use them to connect the two sides of the exhaust together".
"Why"?
"Well, Through our extensive testing, it has been determined that they serve no actual purpose other than to complicate the exhaust system and add to it's final costs. But, we figured that we would put them on every Goldwing that we sell anyway ....... just for the heck of it".

That’s the noise level I’m shooting for. I have another buddy who’s hooking me up with HD mufflers with tuneable baffles for free. I also added bigger spacers to the front forks 3/4” past the top of the fork. The must have been cut previously and had a large nut on top that just brought it level to the top of the fork so I made a pvc spacer. I also added about an oZ of atf as they did not rise to the level indicated on Randakks site. So I removed the springs and measured from the top. I had originally measured 6oz as the manual says. Turned the rear shocks to the midway point also. They were on the softest setting. I’m hopeing for a little more stability at higher speeds and not eating the handlebars when making a quick stop. The front forks seemed a little soft before. Tomorrow is the test ride. And thanks for the muffler info all.

I won’t muck up my original mufflers if the slipons rob it of to much power. Just in case

I addapted some cbr rear pegs to the original rear mounts. Next is paint. I did have to tac a little dohikky in place because they use a spring and bearing to lock up. A little grinding to round a corner so it flips up and a little grinding off the back of the dohikky to get it in the proper position. Tacked in so it doesn't spin when I put it in the raised position. Not the prettiest weld but it holds. I don't really ride two up but I'd like to have the option.

Got the pipes off. Straight pipes sure are loud enough.

Still waiting on short glass pack mufflers. I can really feel the power loss on the low end with the 12" straight pipes. I'm replacing the valve cover gaskets and grommets so I decided to ceramic paint them while they are off.

Added some extra led driving lights from Amazon tonight. Looks pretty good to me. The short mufflers showed up but I need to have the end expanded to fit.

Well I developed a small oil leak on the opposite side valve cover after I replaced the gaskets and the 500 mile trip. I seem to remember a small crack when I took the covers off last time. But if it's not broke... Pretty sure that's my leak. So I ordered replacement used covers. Also the vht high heat paint doesn't seem to want to set. I baked it and everything but it's still maleable after I run the bike. So lower temp paint on this next set of valve covers. The vht epoxy is holding up well on the rear shocks and timing covers so I will go that route this time.
