Read Tire 82' Interstate
What needs to be modified or replaced to install a wider rear tire on a stripped naked 82 Interstate?

Re: Read Tire 82' Interstate
A wider wheel since the stock rim is made for the size that it came with.
Seriously you can go one size bigger and be ok. But when you start putting wider tires on wheels designed for a smaller one you actually put less rubber on the road.

Re: Read Tire 82' Interstate
I believe but haven’t checked, your 82 has a 2.5” rear rim which limits the width. The arm (rod) that stabilizes the caliper is one item on 1100’s which is in the way. Lots of easy work-arounds for that. Your best bet would be getting an 83 rim which was 3” wide and comes with a 140/90/16 stock.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: Read Tire 82' Interstate
Actually, the '82 and '83 have the same rim size, swing arm, etc. The '82 has a comstar rim, the '83 is cast aluminum. Both will allow going one size up with no mods, but anything larger will require modifying the swing arm for clearance.ericheath wrote:I believe but haven’t checked, your 82 has a 2.5” rear rim which limits the width. Re: Read Tire 82' Interstate
The '82 already has larger tires than the earlier 1100s and it will accept one size bigger, depending on the brand ....

Would a swingarm from a GL1500 bolt on without modification?

Re: Read Tire 82' Interstate
Agreed on all the above but everybody also forgets the rearmost bottom corner of the gas tank coz it's also in the way of fitting a wider tyre!

Re: Read Tire 82' Interstate
I went with a Metzler ME880 150/80B-16 on the rear of my '83. Had to grind the weld seam on the swing arm a bit to gain clearance. No mods to gas tank. Each tire make/model will be slightly different even with same stated tire dimensions.

Re: Read Tire 82' Interstate
It is possible it can hit on the upper frame fender mounts as well. You would have to be nearly bottomed out to do it, but could happen and cut the tire.
I have the 1500 final and wheel with a 1200 swing arm in a 1000. Avon 160/80/16 hits it, but my first tire did not. The Avon is a good half inch wider, and the 1200 swing arm places the tire 1/2” left of center as well.

Re: Read Tire 82' Interstate
I understand Honda had manufacturing issues with the first three years of 1100 swing arms, finally obtaining consistency with the 83 swing arm. I'm curious if my 82 swing arm is out of spec. Do any of you know the measurements or where I can find the specs for the 83 swing arm?
Eric, what went into installing the 1200 swing arm?

Re: Read Tire 82' Interstate
I cut down the 1200 swingarm outer edges and some of the insides of the 1000 frame. The 1100 swingarm mod covers most of it. I was not able to save the seals, so it’s covered with innertube and zip ties and will require regular removal for cleaning and grease. I also had the 1000 pivot pins machined down to fit the 1200 collars. A better option might be to have bronze bushing made. Sandy sent me pics of his after mine was done and it looked to be better.
I think it could be done with the seals, but it’s tight. I may try to epoxy some seals in place this spring. As evidenced, this really alters the frame. Not for everyone.
I think the 1100 is a better drive ratio swingarm for the power available. The 1200 spaces the wheel over to the left 1/2”.
