Naked is fun!

Post by RacerEleven »

Well here I go...start of my build....on a budget.

Step one, start with a low priced bike with minimal issues...

Judging by the pic, I'm not a small person, so a bike that fits me was the challenge.

Found a 1981 GL1100 standard. Running bike, needs new tires, new fork seals. Local. $600 final price.

Success

Scrambler is what I'm shooting for... well my own take on a scrambler with some traditonal styling cues.

Last weekend I did this....

Started with a new (to me) handle bar. Nice straight reach to the grips. Slight upturn with a cross brace. I like it!

Then this

Gone are the Orange body parts, replaced with Blue from a long gone parts bike... yes I have another Goldwing (a bigger project than this one for another time) and enough body parts for a third ;)

More fabbing ... chopped front fender. On stock mounting holes for now, not certain it will remain there

The overall stance. A marked transformation already... So far so good.

After I figured out a starting issue, with a lot of help from this site and other goldwingers out there, (see my other post on GL1100 starting issues) I got this done today...

Cleaned up the seat foam a bit more then mounted a portion of the old seat cross hatch vinyl on the rear of the seat...

In my mind, it's going to form the foundation of the actual seat upholstery. Hopefully I can swing it!

I kinda like it but I think I can modify the drop down the sides to make it more slim... a bit more scrambler style.

The red grips are a hint at the sign of things to come haha. Stay tuned ;)

Another great place for the garage DYIer is Harbor Freight. It's good there isn't one down south of the border too close to Ottawa. I'd be there a lot!
