I've Googled, but I can't for the life of me find the Regulation/Law that states you're allowed to paint your license plate. All I ever find is "you may not alter, deform, or destroy in any way...."HOTT wrote: I painted the license plate. It's done in 1949 (NGW) colors. Yes it's legal. Gotta love Texas.

I'm not criticizing you, just curious because I'd LOVE to paint mine. Do you know where I can look to find the legalities? (Being from Texas and all.)

Maybe I should rewrite it. I'm sure there is nothing in print that says you can paint your own license plate.
I've never been stopped for my plate and when I have been stopped, the color was never called into question.
This is how it worked for me.
When renewing my registrations I applied for the 5yr inspection cycle (our bikes are antiques). When I went to the
counter I asked in lieu of a new plate could I use a vintage plate. The answer was ''yes, do you have it with you"
I presented the embossed plate(s), one had to be searched because it wasn't in my name. The color was never mentioned.
The first time I did it was with 'Sparky. I reg'strd with the old white & black plate embossed. I then painted it (I was willing to take my chances). Second time around when I asked to keep it instead of a new plate. I showed the plate and it was renewed with same number.
Try it the worst they can say is no.
I guess a good question would be, what color are you going to paint it?

Indiana is different but you can run a plate from the same year as your vehicle.

A..far to young to know what colour a vintage plate was
B..doesn't care as long as it's licensed and insured.

Re: Lucky #13 by HOTT
I have had problems with young cops stopping me for not having a seat belt. They had no idea that cars before 1968 didn't have shoulder belts, and they couldn't see the lap belt. (I also failed TX state inspections for that.)

Re: Lucky #13 by HOTT
Certain classes of large trucks only have license plates on the front. I (and some of my drivers) have been stopped for not having a plate on the back. Trying to explain to a cop (not a young one at that) that it was the State or Feds that he needed to take it up with and not me was frustrating but he finally agreed not to give me a ticket saying he knew where our plant was and he would be over to see me if what I said wasn't true. I have never seen him since.

That's interesting, and good to know. I bought a 1983 Motorcycle Texas plate on Ebay, I wonder if they'd balk at trying to use it for my 1978...HOTT wrote:No criticism taken.keebler64 wrote:I've Googled, but I can't for the life of me find the Regulation/Law that states you're allowed to paint your license plate.
