I have one of those sitting around. Probably unnecessary in my climate. It was from a cb900 I think.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: Out of the Dumpster
Last week, wife and I trailered our bikes out to Big Bend National Park and its next door neighbor Big Bend Ranch Texas State Park. This was our second trip there with the bikes and I strongly recommend it as a destination (Spring or Fall) whether you are on a bike or just a car. Some of the most beautiful roads anywhere and so little traffic that you are almost alone most of the time.
Anyway, this week I was back hard at it on the '76. I finished sorting out the heads ('78 with '76 cams) and installed them on the GL1100 engine. Removed the electronic ignition unit from the rear cover and capped the oil seal with a bolt and nut.
The frame was powder coated and now I am waiting on a number of incidental items to come back from the powder coater. By the way, if you are anywhere close to San Antonio, I heartily recommend Eagle Creek Powder Coating. Great guys to work with and reasonably priced.
Today I spent about two hours roto rootering the fuel lines in the gas tank. I have said before that cleaning and prepping gas tanks is one or even the thing I dislike most about rebuilding these old bikes, but this tank was in pretty good shape and a couple hours with diluted Muriatic acid got the inside clean and the outside only required light sanding and cleaning before paint----but I paid for it when it came time to clean the fuel lines. But all is well that ends well!
Unfortunately, I discovered that the only set of fork legs that I have for the GL1000 are the bent ones I rejected from my last project. Also with probably four GL1000 parts bikes in various stage of disassembly I was surprised to find that I do not have (or cannot find, which is the same thing!) the pivot bolts for the swing arm. Two sets for the GL1100 but nada for the 1000. So those things are putting a damper on reassembly. I have also discovered assorted nuts and bolts that will need to be tracked down. But I think what is there so far is looking pretty good.

Re: Out of the Dumpster
Do you have 1100 forks/front end. It's pretty much a bolt on.

Re: Out of the Dumpster
Yes, I even have a set of '83 forks with rims, unfortunately at this point I also have (on order) powder coated spoke wheels and new tires for the 17 and 19 inch rims. I really wanted this build to have spoke wheels. I thought when I get them back I might see if I can make everything line up I know the spacing is different for brakes and rotors.ericheath wrote:Do you have 1100 forks/front end. Re: Out of the Dumpster
It's doable. 83 1100 forks will be bigger and better, Trac drive. Just swap the 1100 triple tree in. You will also need to change the stops.

Re: Out of the Dumpster
Picked up the powder coated parts yesterday pm and mounted the tires. Pinched one of the tubes! So today i have to track down a tire patch kit. Mounted the rotors to the spoke wheels and checked out the fit on a GL1100 front end I had sitting in storage. Looks like you are correct Eric, I didn't have brakes on it but looks about right.
So this morning I pulled the front end off an '80 parts bike with good chrome on the tubes. Decided to save the '83 for another project later on. This one has the brakes on it so in a bit I will go out and switch the wheels to confirm the fit.
One thing though, the speedometer gear is on the opposite side which now means the front tire was mounted backwards and will need to be changed. Changing tires is almost as much fun as cleaning gas tanks.

Re: Out of the Dumpster
Eric is correct. Everything lines up and the wheel turns freely. Unfortunately the rotors are not interchangeable and the GL1000 rotors have a six bolt pattern while the GL1100 (1980) has a five bolt pattern. I was hoping to change those as well as the original ones are a little rough and will need to be turned or replaced. Interestingly to me anyway is that the 83 has a six bolt pattern as well so maybe those disks will interchange.

Re: Out of the Dumpster
Some progress the last couple of days. It seems like the most time consuming job on this bike has been tracking down nuts bolts, gaskets, o-rings and odd ball parts that would ordinarily be present (mostly) on a restoration/rebuild. But since this is just being assembled from spare parts, finding some of those spares seems to take forever. I finally got my swing arm pivots and the boot for the drive shaft so I was able to assemble that but then came the problem with the retaining ring--sometimes they go on easy and sometimes they don't. This was one of those times. I will skip the ugly details but after a half hour of trying to get the retaining ring on the output shaft, it finally soaked through this old thick skull that the ring I was trying to fit was for an internal application and the output shaft required an external snap ring!! Then after looking through every tray and can in the shop I finally remembered the output shaft in the storage building that still had the snap ring on it.
Another half hour and it was finally together. Then I went looking for the bolts to hold the final drive to the swing arm. Couldn't find but one, BUT i did find an outside radius snap ring in the same tray I had been through a dozen times in my previous search. And so it goes. Photos to come. (please excuse the rant!)

Re: Out of the Dumpster
Here is a shot of current state of assembly. Today I should get the radiator on and I am working on the front forks. Need to order seals for the forks and brake parts. Waiting on cash. Need to sell some bikes!!!
The second shot shows the modifications to the neck for the '80 series "trees". Had to cut off the large tab for steering-stop and add a couple of bolts for the new stop.

Re: Out of the Dumpster
Moving along, it is great to be retired, gives you time to do those interesting projects you never had time for, like drilling rotors. It only took about three days! I am not sure I am up for another set but I have to say I like them.
Here is a good look at some of the powder coated parts. The rims and spokes are powder coated as are valve covers and headlight ears. These headlight ears were a case of problem stimulates invention. You may recall I was planning to use GL1000 forks and had this set of headlight ears blasted and powder coated in expectation of use. The problem arose when I switched to the 1100 forks which have significantly larger tubes. Rather than set them aside for the next project requiring gold headlight ears, I decided to cut them to remove the lower portion where the turn signals typically mount. This allowed me to turn them upside down for a slightly lower headlight position and using an extra set of the rubber insulators they fit is just about perfect.
This afternoon I plan to tackle the brakes. Haven't opened them up yet but they don't look too bad. Probably still need to spend $60 or so for brake kits.
