A little to start a build thread but I'm not quite finished so it still counts, right?
Bought the bike in the fall. Have always wanted to build a GL1000 since I got into bikes years ago. Finally had one pop up that was a good starting point. It barely ran but it was enough that I wasn't worried that it would be a total loss.
It's needed basically one of everything from the get go. The bike had some big long turndown mufflers which I wasn't a fan of but it did come with a mostly rusty original muffler. The tank was original and in good shape. The side panels have been spray painted black. The valve covers and timing covers are some old drag specialties.
The guy who I bought it off put points in and had the timing so far off I have no idea how it ran. Adjusted that and still only firing on one side. Got into the carbs sand found one side of the rack to have been kinda taken apart and wrong jets put in and was not very clean at all, other side was plugged solid and gross. Who does that? Got them sonic dipped and got proper Jets. Ended up finding a much nicer set off a 75 and rebuilt those with the Randakk kit.
New fork seals, timing belts, tires, rear shocks, headlight, taillight, bars, grips, signal flasher, 7v regulator so the Guages work, mod the rear fender, need a front one still, rebuilt all 3 calipers and had to find a different set for the front mine the bokts were seized in completely, new pads, rebuilt rear master, got a new front on the way, stainless brake lines, wheel bearings and steering stem bearings, powdercoat frame, wheels and other bits, shortened throttle and clutch cables should be here soon. Got it fired up and it runs great just have to sync the carbs up and weld on mufflers.
Haven't taken many pictures, have had so many bikes apart they all start to look the same stripped. The final stages are the best anyways.

Either way. It looks a lot cleaner than many of these old girls who are just parked for years.
Resto's are nice, but it has to be something you want. It's tough to get your money out of these so do as you want. I have one stick and one carved up Johnny Cash model. I like the Johnny Cash model much better.
It's worth checking local laws regarding major changes. Some places are making your bike --yours forever --with legislation stopping modifications.

Looking good. Still shows its heritage, just isn't wearing a '75 vintage "leisure suit" any longer.

Yeah the goal was to clean up some of the lines and get rid of the stuff that really dates it like the big bars, lights and exhaust. I like the simple and stout look.
