Regarding swapping dummy/faux tank

#1

Post by ivanljungdahl »

Hi!
I have a gl1000 from 1979 and are thinking about changing the dummy/faux tank to a tank from the first generation 75-77.
Does anybody have experience or knows if it's a bolt on/plug and play exercise?

Best regards

They do mount differently, so it's not plug and play...

Thank you for the reply.
Do you by any change now what the difference is? Maybe its not that much that needs to be redone or modified?
Is it the frame that is different?
I was thinking about getting the whole dummy tank from the earlier version.

I think you just need the 77 subframe along with the panels. Then as I recall you may need to move some electrical items under the left cover. Seven volt regulator, I think.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Thank you Greg
That's sounds good.
Yes the subframe to the faux tank needs to be changed.
If the mounting points on the frame are the same on the 75-77 and the 79 model then it should work I think.

I'm using the entire '76 shelter and panels on my '78. They'll bolt onto the existing tabs on the frame. I can't speak to the electricals since I'm doing my own design for harnessing and C5 ignition.

Perfect J.R!
Just what I thought.
Then I just need to find the subframe and panels from a Gl1000 75-77.
The plan is actually to create a own tank, but I think I will have to take it in steps. So it will be perfect with the faux tank from the 75-77 as a start.

Thank you for the help!
