Faux Tank now the Real tank

#1

Post by maivey0412 »

Hello all,

I am new here, just got my first GL1000 the other month, but I have been around bikes while and build a few a year as a hobby. I don't go too nuts usually, but as I have pointed my hobby more towards small business I'm looking to make a big splash with this 78 GL1000.

I'm going in a Cafe Racer direction with it, but I LOVE the lines of the original faux tank. I am going to delete the original tank because I want an open look in the rear, so I was going to modify the area that house the faux tank to be a real tank. Frame geometry isn't too much of a worry to me, some 1 inch DOM or CREW steel tube will more than support the neck and I can create a strong backbone for the bike. So here is my problem, is there a place that makes a tank with the lines of the original faux tank? Or am I just going to have to get out the hammers and the TIG?

I don't mind doing the work on it, I was just wondering if anyone knew better than I. I will also post picutres as I go along this journey. I have been "lurking" around this forum and WOW! Tons of info compaired to some other groups!

Welcome!
There is no 'real' tank with the look of a '78(to my eye). Some of the CB750's come close (kinda).
There will be a whole lot of frame mods that will be left up to you to wade through
for fit and capacity and,and,and.... But hey! that's why we do it.

Sounds like you got the talent. I'm gona kick back and see how you tackle it :orange

Welcome to the 'Wingdom.

Pretty original thinking there, most have gone to something different when putting on a 'real' tank .... like HOTT I think you'll have to do it yourself.

We'd love to follow along tho', so post lotsa pics please ....

has anyone attempted to use the fake tank panels to make a mold for a fiberglass tank?

5speed, that is what I was thinking. I may just have to do that, but I like steel so much better... You can just tell, or at least I can, when something is fiberglass or steel when it has been painted and buffed to a high polish. The upper portion of the frame is getting chopped off because of capacity issues with the tank I'm going to have to build. I may, in the end, just weld in the back bone for support, build a geometric tank of some sort and put the original tank panels on the new tank. I want to preserve the look as best as I can, and I also want to keep the guages on the tank as well. I admit I'm taking some cues from this bike: http://www.pipeburn.com/home/2011/12/01 ... guapo.html over at PipeBurn, but I want a clean look, not a rat bike.

I may do a video tonight for YouTube about some ideas and link it here. I will at least get you guys some picutres of where I am at, after the kiddos go Trick or Treeting.

if you built the tank to fit under the original panels maybe you could incorporate it into the seat somehow to give you more capacity..

I honestly don't care that much about a huge capacity, this won't be a bike for long travels, just around town. A close friend who owns a metal and machine shop said I should get a tank kit. It would allow me to get most of the metal bending out of the way, like the tunnel, and I TIG mounts on for the faux sides and the gauges. It's not a bad idea at all.

As promised some pictures as well. I have also included some of the 1980 CB900C that I am building and my shop in general. I am actually getting ready for a shop upgrade, a new electrical sub panel and some new tools. I am looking at opening up a custom cycle shop out of my garage very soon, so I am getting set up for that. These two bikes will be my "show" bikes as advertising for my shop. I'm only 30, so being able to do this is really awesome for me.
