I built a manometer last night...gonna sync the carbs this evening. I need to recheck timing too. It just kinda goes flat around 6500 and has a little misfiring at low RPM. Something's off, but it's been running well enough that I haven't bothered.

So I spent yesterday evening syncing carbs...I should've done this a long time ago. No idea why I didn't.
Here's before:
And after:
It idles so smoothly now. I also used to have a really annoying dead spot off idle, and when you were riding down the road and rolled on the throttle, you could hear 1 or 2 cylinders hanging low. That's all gone now. Idle is virtually perfect, and throttle response is smooth and linear.

Built mine the same way after watching some videos on YouTube. And it's actually even more accurate than using gauges... never needs calibrating.

We probably saw the same video. I didn't do the PVC pipe reservoir/airbreak thing, but its fine without it. I might add some in the future, but it's not a huge priority at the moment. Worked like a champ.

Dang, that does look accurate. I have a Carbtune that I bought 10 years or so ago and paid about $100 for it (as I recall). In 10 years, I have probably used it a dozen or so times. Not sure that was worth the $100 ... but it does fit into a drawer in the toolbox...

amazing how much better the multi carb bikes run when they're all sync'd huh??? so many problems cured by this fix.
nice looking sync gauge! I too have a carbtune, got an incredible deal on it ages ago and it works great, but before that, i used this method, and it worked perfectly!

Yeah, the gauge set me back about $25 all in. I cut a recess for those clear tubes on the table saw...I should've used that as an excuse to buy a dado blade.
I'm considering buying a Gunson Colortune too to dial in the mixture.

Nice call. I've always wanted one of those, but haven't had the need to buy one...

Out of curiosity, how much mileage do y'all generally get out of a rear tire, something like a Dunlop 404 or Shinko 230?

A buddy of mine that is a newer rider got about 4,xxx miles out of a 404...he wasn't riding that aggressive, as he was still new to riding. I do know the pressure was always at 41 psi cold.
This was on an 1100...

Currently about 4000 miles on a 430. Looks to be, maybe, half gone. '78 GL1

Re: Buffet Racer: Propav8r's '78 GL1000
Interesting. I'm getting 3500-4000 out of the D404s and S203s I've been running on the back. I do live in the mountains though.
The bike has been running great. It'll weep a little bit of coolant out of the water pump sitting overnight after a ride, but not more than a couple drops. It's not worth taking it off the road quite yet...that'll be a winter project.
More than likely, I'll be pulling the motor back out this winter and investing some genuine effort on a paintjob. I'm not at all happy with the paint finish on the motor, and it really drags the look of the whole bike down.

Re: Buffet Racer: Propav8r's '78 GL1000
Whelp, as the old-timers told me, it's not a question of if you go down, it's a question of when.
My when was about a week ago. I was leading a (car) cruise of about 30 people on a beautiful backroad out here. I had dusted the cars, and when I got to a straight section, I pulled up to let them catch up.
I was thinking about what was behind me instead of what was in front. I turned sorta side-saddle making sure the whole group was with me, and then gassed it as I turned around forward again.
Big mistake. I was farther along on the straight than I thought, and I had twisted the throttle about 30 yards before a sharp left hander.
I did the thing you're NEVER supposed to do, and fixated on a big gooseneck trailer on the outside of the turn.
Of course, I hit it. I overbraked, skidded, and went off the road. I got lucky enough to go underneath the arch of the goosneck, but the bike went down in the dirt at a fairly slow speed.
I was uninjured (because I was wearing full gear and a full face) and the bike is a little worse for wear.
Bent fork (at least the right, I'm replacing both just to be sure), tweaked wheel, and a little bit of broken fiberglass on the tail. No huge losses, and nothing a couple hundred bucks can't fix.
I rode the bike the rest of the day with a pretty decent wobble, but nothing too terrible. I didn't notice the tweaked fork til I got home.
So I've sourced a set of forks, a '79 Comstar front wheel which is going to powdercoat today, along with a couple other things. I'm still not sure if I need an axle or not. I should check that tonight...I think the triple tree is okay. I checked it with a straightedge and everything still looks lined up.
