Dark GreenWing 1977
Hey NGW,
My names Cody from Northern California (Figured I should introduce myself). A bit ago I got a 1977 Honda Goldwing from a friend who simply had too many projects and wanted to get rid of it. So with $200 in my pocket it was sold! Haha. I've been tinkering around with it here and there, but now with a bit saved up, I'm set to go full steam ahead.
The bike originally looked like this when I first received it from my buddy:
So, already the bike was stripped down, but I always get curious about knowing the WHOLE bike and not just the surface, so I began stripping the bike down to the frame...
I have a lot more progress as to where I'm at with sketches and what not, but I figured this was enough for an intro and over the next few days, I'll be posting the newest ideas and progress for you guys. Can't wait for the finished product and your guys' input.

Re: GreenWing Building 1977
So one of the crazier things I did, and I know I will get grief from some, BUT I ended up cutting the frame of the motorcycle (great idea, right?). What happened was I was trying to get the engine out of the frame, and before knowing of this site, was coming to no avail on how to get that huge engine out! With my brother being a welder and also in the garage at the time, he had the simple answer of, "Just cut the frame, duh?!" So, the angle grinder came out and four cut areas later, and the engine was able to drop out with ease! Haha
I fixed it later by inserting a metal tube to go INSIDE the frame, pushing the frame together and welding around the new pipe and frame. Structurally it is as strong if not stronger than it was, but I will NEVER do that one again!
It was a risky thing to do, but after 6 hours of working on a bike and frustration out of the window... it happens. Haha
But with that done you can see where the cuts were made and how well it was put back together and is now sent out to get a fresh powder coat and it will be ready in two weeks.
Below you can see where the cuts were made, bottom frame next to the engine mounts, and right side near the middle. Looks like nothing happened once it was sanded down. And luckily I got to take ALOT of rust out once the frame was opened up.

Re: GreenWing Building 1977
That's diving right in. What kind of carb is on it?
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: GreenWing Building 1977
At the point of not getting the engine out, I would have gone into the house to complain to my wife. That is when she would have told me, "If all else fails, read the directions". But what does she know? Obviously, with two guys in a garage full of tools and know-how, you came up with the same answer I tend to give to her... "There is more than one way to skin a cat".
Looking forward to seeing this build. Keep the pics and updates coming.

Re: GreenWing Building 1977
I'm glad you asked! It was something fairly simple to do, and it was mainly done because of what I was hearing about how hard it usually is syncing the four carbs up once they're off. So what we ended up doing was a single-carb conversion on the engine.ericheath wrote:That's diving right in. What kind of carb is on it?
It's all taken apart now, but when it was put together the engine rankings well with it on and no syncing issues!

Hahaha, thanks TNTbefree I knew someone would understand!
And JBz, I had no idea! I'll try and change it up a little bit since our headlines are so similar. But no worries, I'll be going with a darker green for mine.JBz wrote:hope there is no confusion.......jb

Re: Dark GreenWing 1977
Heu guys!
Just a quick show and tell..
Their were years of gunk and grime on the engine from old gaskets and what not. So I took some wire wheels and went to cleaning. With some engine degreaser and a few free days, the gunk came off along with the paint. Below are some images of the engine after the wire wheels:
I used a high temperature silver spray can that you can get from any local auto store with no gloss (based of people's recommendations) and it seemed to go pretty well.
Now the engine sure is looking pretty! New gaskets and everything put in!

Re: Dark GreenWing 1977
A new little thing I started:
So I envision this bike being as sleek as possible, and I usually like a lower grip/stance on a bike so I was already planning on doing some clip on bars for the forks. The only issue was... the Triple tree's do not look too attractive when nothing is in them. So I decided to smooth out the triple trees. The difficult thing came into play when the holes for the triple tree covers were still showing. Being a little OCD, I decided to grind it down to get rid of the manufactured holes but still try and keep the smoothness and organic shape provided on the top.
Above is the beginning stage
After getting the triple tree ground down, it was inevitable that these top cuts happened with how much it rises in the center and me still wanting to keep it smooth... I am already planning on stripping the triple tree to bare aluminum and polishing it to give it a good ol' shine on the top.
With a little bit of bondo work and sand paper I was able to get it looking pretty good! Quick primer and some silver engine enamal, you can hardly tell anything was done to that top triple tree!
The Final Product:

Re: Dark GreenWing 1977
That's a good idea. I often see bikes with clip ons that end up looking unfinished because of the old bar mounts. Nice work
