My naked MAINE-WING build.

#1

Post by BikeMaine »

This is my first motorcycle build, I was a professional welder, 30 years ago, but now I just weld as a hobby and do things for myself and friends. (I'm a teacher, I teach math and science to 6th graders.)

Hopefully I don't drive you guys nuts with my simple questions. Here is a photo before I get going. It is how it sat in the PO garage.

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

This is Susie. I've stripped her naked, don't laugh, she's a little self conscious.

BTW- where do you put all of those electric parts, wires, connectors, cables, etc... if you use a tank other than the original fake tank?

Weasel the dog keeps me inline and shouts orders. She also knows right where to lay and steal the heat on a day that's 26 degrees and raining.

I could hear an exhaust leak..........

Another question, if I build straight pipes off of these headers, do I need a cross-over pipe?

 GOOD LORD, GORD! I'm not good with DC electric.

I built my own house, did every single thing except the concrete foundation. AC electric, yeah I can do that 120v or 240v, but something about DC on cars, snowmobiles, etc....not my strength for sure. :IDTS:

Welcome and good luck. This is a friendly helpful site so don't worry about too many or what kind of questions. We all (or most of us) had the same questions to begin. 12 volt wiring is not my strength either but it is a bit like math in that the diagram is like a formula only more clear, just spend time studying it and suddenly it will make sense. Good color diagrams are available here on the site.

I just wish I had welding skills. (and a machine shop!)
Bikes at present:

And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair

Thank you

In my shop I have an old AC stick welder, 110 MIG with gas, metal lathe, although I lack skills to run it, but I'm not afraid to try. (Or I'm too stupid to care), Drill press, bench grinder.

My first major project is to make a new fake tank. Not sure how it will turn out, but I have a 2' X 8' sheet of 16 gauge steel to start cutting on.

I also have a side project, I have a fox that has gone after my dog a couple times. This morning he came right up the driveway after her. He's going to do this one of these days when I have a rifle in my hands.....
