I'm guessing with being much higher, the forks seemed very weak compared to the other GL1000's.
I've never used Progressive fork springs before.
I'm thinking they're worth a shot.

I just installed a set of Progressive fork springs in my 82. It called for 20wt fork oil, and I only had 10wt in the garage, so that is what got used. It made a dramatic difference in the front end of my rig, even with the wrong weight oil.
I ordered a jug of 20wt oil, and had every intention of changing it out, but I used some of it on my FT500 forks when I gave it new seals, and don't think I have enough left.... :IDTS: None of the shops in the area carry 20wt, so I will have to order....again.
Not a real cheap upgrade, at around 100 bucks. But it sure makes a difference.
In the garage:

1982 GL1100 with California Side Car hack
1982 FT500 Ascot(Wife's bike)
1983 FT500 Ascot
1983 XL600R(with some 85 parts)

Wow. Loving this build thread. I ran across a link to this forum while looking at some stuff on Randakk's site but wanting to see the pics on this thread is what made me join. And I am so not disappointed. This is very similar to the direction I want to take when I start building my bike. Really look forward to the next update.

Oh, Wog when you get a chance can you show a better pic of how you mounted the winch. I saw where you have the fairlead but couldn't tell how the winch itself is mounted.

What's up brother'man....

That's a beautiful build. I'm definitely doing something similarly "off-road" and "Knobby" with my 76'.

...question, what size is that rear TKC? I'm looking to go with the lower cost Shinko 804 Big-Blocks... but want to know if you ran the 140/80-17 or 130/80-17 without fitment issues.

After a very l o n g year, I'm back at it.

Today, started with getting some clearance for the aux. side tanks from the fish mufflers.

20171129_154220.jpg

Flipped up the horizontal bandsaw and added the seldom used larger table.
(no, the blade's not that thick, just a fuzzy picture, probably from me holding my fingers so close to the blade without support :IDTS: )

20171129_155408.jpg

Cut a patch from 1/8" thick 6061 alum.

20171129_161226.jpg

Quick weld with the tig, and will clean it up later.

20171129_163740.jpg

Cover with a rattle can paint job for now. Will eventually blast the covers/tanks and powder coat them.

20171129_164710.jpg

Also plan on adding a separate heat shield between the two.
