So sorry to hear about this! Glad you’re ok! A custom bike owner’s worst nightmare for sure!

It's a bummer but it's going to be back better than ever!

Spare GL triple came in the mail, so I got the weld ground down and put it in the press. It came out with much less force than the CBR stem required

I was surprised to find that the GL stem passed right through the CBR triple, as I had read they were the same diameter. Well...

Turns out there is a 0.42mm difference in diameter, so much for an easy press fitting. I am looking into shims, knurling, and also different loctite products intended to restore interference fit tolerances and bond press fittings. I think a combination of knurling and a loctite might do the trick. In the meantime, I am having a steel plug made that will be fitted into the bottom of the GL stem which will include the wider flange that the CBR stem has.

This is my design for the 'plug', which will be welded or brazed into the stem.

Did a bunch more research and thinking this weekend and just couldn’t come up with a solution for pressing the GL stem into the triple with the sloppy fit that I was comfortable with. Finally decided it wasn’t worth taking a risk on something as important as the safety of the front end...so after a little back and forth with the company, We determined that the CBR1000 to CB750 conversion stem from cognito would also work on the GL. Didn’t budget for it but no point doing it half way at this point. Milled from a solid peice of aluminum and made to press into the lower triple

Steering stem will be here later today and had a few other parts show up earlier this week.

I felt like ordering this was a bit of a risk, but the brass trim turns out to match the forks perfectly. Both clamps will be powdercoated black and I have to build a bracket to mount the light, but I think it'll look great.

They are BIG! I will have the spokes by the weekend, can't wait to start assembling this front wheel.

I also ordered an Acewell speedo / tach and have been working on options to mount it while I'm waiting for it to arrive. It's 2.5" Dia, same as my current mini gauges. I trimmed down the ignition mount on the top triple and filed out the radius. Will just need to fab up a bracket which will bolt to the stock ignition mount. From this:

Should do the trick and make for a clean front end. I'm planning on shortening the wiring hardness and relocating most of it to under the false tank so there are minimal wires and cables running to the front end.

Solid aluminum and perfect dimensions to bolt the CBR stuff onto the Goldwing. Not cheap at $120US plus shipping but more than likely the best and safest solution.

Finished removing the steering stops and sanding down the mold lines on the lower triple. Next up is sorting out out the new steering stops and headlight mount

Got my clip-ons over the weekend and worked on sorting out the steering stops. The clip on clamps are the limiting factor, so after tracing the steering stop and getting as much adjusted as I could, I marked the stop locations and then drilled a pilot hole before the final 8mm Hole.

This let me put in cap head screws and they worked pretty much perfectly. For fine tuning I can either grind the head of the bolt if I want more turning or go up a size if I need less. I’ll most likely use stainless bolts for the finished product.

Definitely doesn’t turn as far as stock, but only by a few degrees.
Starting to look pretty mean

I’m going to pick up some aluminum plate this week to get the headlight bracket figured out. After my speedo arrives, I can build the mount for that and then the clamps and brackets can go to powdercoating before I press in the new stem. For the mock ups and measurements I just wrapped some tape around the GL stem and pushed it into the bottom clamp.

Looking like an awesome front end conversion! Seems very well thought out, especially like the custom "stoppers" for the turning radius. Do you plan on powder coating any of the parts like the triple clamps??

Thanks! So far so good...
And yes, the triple clamps are both getting powdercoated satin black (maybe the clip ons too), just waiting till I have all the mounts figured out in case I need to drill more holes.

Got some steel and played around with building a headlight mount. Still needs the joints welded and some finishing work obviously...may not be the final version that ends up on the bike, but it’ll be something similar. Should hardly be visible once it’s powdercoated the same as the clamps.
