I guess another option I have if I am going to be buying a rim is to put the 2.5x17 on the front and lace a 3.5" up in the rear. That would let me run a 120 or 130 up front and a 140 in the rear. A lot more choices that way

The answer was a little deceptive, as I know exactly why front and rear tires are made different. Weight difference, cornering, fork loads, driven wheel vs non-driven, and a bunch of other factors. But I have stated my concerns based on 60 years of working on, riding, and building bikes. As well as degree's in mechanical engineering. I guess I have expressed my opinions loud enough. Time to let the bikes fall where they may

I'm not looking to make my ride less safe in any capacity, one crash is enough for me

In my riding history I have had a few accidents. Even one is one too much. I know exactly what you mean

This morning I ordered a full front brake setup, upper and lower triple clamps, rotors, bearings etc. Only thing I wasn't able to source yet is the axle and bearing collar, turns out they're specific to the RC51 and there aren't too many used out there. May have to go new
Meanwhile, she looks lighter and more streamlined already

Ordered two gloss black 18x3.5 rims this morning. New plan is to run a 130/70/18 front tire and a 140/70/18 rear, which I think will work out perfect and look great. Minor changes to the ride height

Will have to get some spoke sets made once everything gets here and I can measure it all up. I'm going to go alloy hub, stainless spokes and gloss black rim. Something like this only with a silver hub (this is the exact rim but on a Harley Hub):

Needs a little more polishing, but it’s a subtle change I think makes a big difference.

My hub also came in!

Tomorrow my brakes and triples should be here and I can start test fitting stuff. I’ll have the rims this weekend and can get the final measurements for the spokes from Buchanan’s.

I've looked into the AM26, but hadn't heard of the dunlops, I'll check them out. There are a few options out there for what I want.

A few parts showed up. They need a disassembly and a good cleaning, but I couldn't resist checking to see the fit.

This picture shows how much too short the CBR954 stem is. But it is the same diameter as the GL so it seems like it will be a relatively straight forward press out / press in. Unweighted, the middle of axle to the top of the triple tree at the stem is 5mm shorter than what I measured the stock at.

The immediate list of things I know need to be cut off, trimmed, etc
1) Wheel lock tab on the top of the GL steering head
2) Steering stops on the CBR bottom triple
3) I am relocating my ignition to the stock horn location, so I am going to shave the mount either entirely off the CBR top triple or partially and repurpose it as a mount for the Acewell I plan on getting.

I ordered a bottom mount 5 3/4" headlight as I really liked this style setup:

Was doing some more measuring / comparing the CBR & GL stems and I’m convinced it is going to be straight forward once I get the stems swapped. The distance from the top bearing set to the end of the stem is identical between the two, but there are some differences. The CBR uses dual lock nuts above the top bearing with a narrower top yoke whereas the GL has a single lock nut and a thicker top yoke. Using a combination of nuts and spacers from the two stems it should bolt up with no issues. But should I be concerned with the difference in wall thickness on the stems?

That’s quite the difference! I’ve never heard of a GL stem failing, and plenty of people have pushed them hard. There’s no way I’m ever going to reach the speeds, braking or cornering forces of a full fledged race bike, so am I worrying for nothing and should expect the GL stem to be just fine?

Found a cheap shop press for sale in my local classifieds and picked it up today. Had to alter the design a little to get the stem under the ram, but once it did it popped out pretty easy.

Figured out why the RC51 stem is so much thicker walled...it’s aluminum. Should have noticed that! My spare GL stem should be here early next week so then I can work on getting that one out as well. My friends dad works at a machine shop so I may get him to turn a plug for the GL stem with the raised rim at the base so it’ll seat in correctly. Also got the old bearing races out in preparation for the all balls kit.

My rims came in so I can measure everything up and get the spokes ordered on Monday.

I have a bit of what might be called an "obsessive personality". Once I start something it's all I can focus on until it's finished :IDTS:
