Re: Full Carbon 75 GL1000
So In the meantime I was making the top cover from CF.
As before, I didn't make a mold but did a single sheet of CF directly onto the outside and then one separately onto the inside to get the lines. I then built up layers on the two hard pieces independently before sticking together with resin.
I set two nuts at the spacing required for the hinge into the resin on the inside and 1 sheet of CF.
As I finished this part I ran out of CF so was unable to complete the lines of the seat until I receive my next delivery.
but I fitted the key and hinge to the top and it works well. I also made the small panel at the seat/ tank interface by direct mold. Simple.
I was pleased with the gel coat finish on the top cover and have no visible defects. I intend to place 1 more sheet on each of the side pods and rear seat hump to replicate this excellent finish. I have ordered some pre-preg CF sheet (just 1m2) to experiment (that's 10.76ft2 to our USA cousins) and see if I can get an even better to coat finish.

Re: Full Carbon 75 GL1000
The last bit of CF I got done in this time using some thin offcuts from my last roll was one of the side cowls, I made it un- necessarily thick really using again direct casting from the original (rusty) chrome radiator cowlings.
It won't fit at present as the side studs from the radiator are so short, so I have some work to do to modify the attachments or make another one from scratch.....

Re: Full Carbon 75 GL1000
Whilst procrastinating on the electrical side of things, I took a snap of my dial and choke cable fitting. Much smaller and neater than the original (purists hold your breath). Well at least we can maybe agree its lighter.......
The acewell is all wired up and functioning but I'm still trying to decide if I need to delve into re-wiring the whole bike or make do with the rats nest as is. I will decide for sure after the side covers are finished and the bike sits fully finished in carbon fibre.

So, onto the exhaust,
I bought some shorty mufflers in the café style, some MAC headers and a 20 deg bend for each side.
It was pretty much a bolt up job and a lot neater (and lighter) than the original staintune system which had become a bit dented.

Moving onto fuelling,
Went to fire the old girl up after the carb rebuild and the cam belt change and noticed the fuel pump was weeping.
I decided I may follow the fuel pump rebuild idea listed on the forum but fancied an electric fuel pump in the meantime.
I fitted new hoses and a makeshift bracket with the new electric pump to fire it up.
The pump was a Goss LP unit from supercheap auto for about 79 AUD

Re: Full Carbon 75 GL1000
For my carb cap issue I decided to set my own cap out of resin.
To do this I used P34 (pre-mixed fibreglass) to make a mold of one of the caps, then set in resin in 2 parts to get the correct curvature on the inner dome and allow the plunger to travel to the top of the vacuum bowl.
as per below pics, new unit fresh from casting next.
The first attempt failed and I cracked it as I pressed it into the vacuum cap.
The second time around I pressed the resin in when it was not fully set and therefore a bit more pliable.
When the time comes, I will use my mould again to replace all of the caps I think.

Re: Full Carbon 75 GL1000
The final small update for this rotation I guess relates to weight saving.
For my interest I thought I'd weigh up all of the parts I have removed and see how much potential weight I've lost.
The sum total came to just under 45kgs, including the exhaust system, farings, bodywork, rear cage, fenders, indicators, dials, meters of redundant wiring, tacho and speedo cables, brake lines, fuel lines, old hoses etc.
The sum total of parts I have added will be around 15kgs, so maybe a 30 kg weight saving, perhaps 10% of the bike. Not sure if anyone else has experienced the feel of a 10% improvement in power to weight ratio on an old GL???? relative to NGW, it will be less as most of my weight saving was achieved by ditching the 15kg front faring and light assembly.....
Anyway, some shots of the bike like an industrial butterfly emerging from its surrounding larvae of redundant parts (all of which are now for sale, if any is interested)
That's all for now until I get back home in 2 weeks to continue the fabrication. I'm pondering shaping the tank for my legs along the white lines made in the side panels on some earlier shots. Any opinions on tank cuts welcome.

Re: Full Carbon 75 GL1000
One more quick note for the time being, a café racer CX500 I saw parked outside the Claremont quarter last week.
A neat, period looking modified bike I reckon. The tank looked like it had been buffed back to steel then coated in lacquer.
I like the seat but its a bit long for my liking, particularly for solo riding. Great fun looking bike though.

Very cool, Hoops. Keep sharing what you do. What headers are those? Did you get them chromed, or did they come like that?
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: Full Carbon 75 GL1000
G'day Hoops,
Have to catch up sometime. I am still interested in some of your left overs, I am on a tight budget at the moment though.
I would be interested in picking your brains on how to do that terrific CF work in making moulds, I might turn my grandsons 78 into something like you have done (which is Terrific!) as he is not the slightest bit interested in what I am doing.
Peter.

Totes,
Might even throw you all the molds when i'm done as its either that or they go in the bin.
Hoping to have it all finished in the next few weeks.

They were from some classic motorcycle mob called trojan classics in Sydney, NSW, ( http://www.trojanclassics.com/ )they came like that and have detachable rears with the ability to add sound deadening FG to the mufflers.ericheath wrote:Very cool, Hoops. I think they were about 120 AUD for the pair and seem good quality.
Similar are available here.

Re: Full Carbon Fibre GL1000
Had to share the most recent lotus that has been built. Full Carbon fibre and designed by daniel simon. A true visionary.
I love the way they have made a futuristic and modern looking form but somehow retained some sort of classical lines.
Pondering CF curves for the GL1000 now to go from the bottom of the tank panels to the flat 4.

Re: Full Carbon Fibre GL1000 Goldwing
I'm enjoying your thread. Now that you have gone to an electric fuel pump and a coil based tach, you can remove that tach/pump mount. Once the mount is off, take a dead blow hammer and tap the end of the cam sticking out. It will snap cleanly off as easy as pie. Then you can fab a cover for the hole that is left. This will further reduce weight and clean up the look on the back of the right head.
I found the end of the internet
