And, if you don't already own one, a good quality long stem "drift" combined with a hammer will get those races out. If you can weld, a few blobs of weld on the old race will cause it to shrink and make it easier to knock out.
Bikes at present:

83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
83 GL in process :IDTS:

Makes sense, especially with the years of wear on the current bearings and races. Where is this access cut on the stem or race?

Getting my shielding gas refilled this weekend. Gives me some motivation to fill it after trying to drive out the races last night with a brass punch, there is no edge to even catch.

There is a tiny place to get a purchase on the lower race. Clean it well and feel with your finger. Honda was thinking on this one, it's just that there isn't a lot of room to mess with there. With a few well placed raps around it, it will come out. I used the hooked end of a tire removal tool through the top.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I cut through the race with a dremel cut off wheel. If I am careful it leaves only a tiny nick in the neck, which doesnt matter. After cutting through, the race pops right out.
I found the end of the internet

Progress pics, just mocked up with out bearings for now.
About how much did you guys have to remove from the neck to get the Hayabusa stem to fit, w/o the bearing installed it seems to be pretty close?

I took off about a 1/4" from the neck. But im only using one stem nut, so you may need a bit more.

Basically just grind a bit, then see how it looks...repeat till you're satisfied

Exactly....

That is what I did with mine, and worked out great! It ended up being just about flat with the rest of the frame as I recall....would have to go out and look, but it's
Pretty chilly out at the moment, so it may have to wait. :-D

Question, did you guys press on the lower bearing, seems like a really tight fit? Also, did you place both washers on there after the grease seal for the lower bearing?

I had a local shop remove the old and press on the all balls lower bearing.

Mine is just the dust seal no washers. Btw make sure you pack the bearing first as itd be next to impossible once on the stem.

Good call on the packing the grease first. It's not two much stress on the bearing without the washers or do the washers act more as spacers cause one of those washers is really thick?

Got the front end on hopefully for good. The back sits a bit higher than I would have guessed, but I will have to figure that one out later.

Started working out the rear seat. I'm planning on using my old F4i seat, which happens to fit the lines of the frame really well with how the frame kicks out a bit. I really like how it has some dimension with it over a traditional cafe seat pad. The rear height of the seat will be lowered a bit. I plan on building a traditional cafe, bubble tail with the seat angles cut into it. I think this will match the new age front end look with the classic style of the tank.

Nice, like your idea with the seat.
Are you planning on making the tail piece from scratch in fibreglass?
