From scratch with sheet metal. I've done plenty of heavy duty fab work on rock crawlers and mud trucks over the years and a little bit with sheet metal repair but never complete fabrication from scratch with sheet metal. Should be a fun challenge.Norbert R wrote:Nice, like your idea with the seat.
Are you planning on making the tail piece from scratch in fibreglass?

Re: Cafe/Hot Rod Build 79Gl1000
Looking great. I found cutting off the rear frame presented a great opportunity to install and hide LED turn sigs. The turn sigs in the picture fit perfectly. You take the signal apart, remove the metal stem, and then run the wires out the back of the signal and through the frame to wherever you want to connect them. I epoxied them in place. I did this on No Quarter and it worked well. Plus they are very bright.

That could be...for some reason, I thought that tank was unique to the 78, but I have been wrong quite a bit lately!
I sort of wish that I had kept my old 78 500... Would have made a lovely base for building a good cafe...

Re: Cafe/Hot Rod Build 79Gl1000
It's been a while...I moved, summers are crazy for me as a youth minister with camps and all. Been making slow progress, if you can call it that. I have been messing around with the rear hoop for a while, problems with shock mounts and tire clearance. I think I came up with a great compromise for all the needs. I have to finish up the welds on the underside and make the seat pan next.

Re: Cafe/Hot Rod Build 79Gl1000
Did some work over the break. Finished the rest hoop all welded up and blended. Started working on the seat and didn't like the way it was going, thinking about using a phat tail cafe seat and cutting it to fit the new rear hoop. Any thoughts? See pic.
Figured I do some fun stuff to, painted the rear wheel to match the front and painted the valve cover gold to match the destressed emblems and gold accents. Colors are going to be black, silver and gold

Coming along nicely. Glad to see you're back at it. Ministry can take over your life, but you probably need this to stay balanced.

Re: Cafe/Hot Rod Build 79Gl1000
Looks like your project is moving along nicely. I just bought a 2010 zx14 complete front end (new) for a project I am starting. Like you, it's a 78. Unfortunately All Balls doesn't make a conversion kit for this swap. I will start a topic soon on the build. I have a good friend that owns an incredible machine shop...every mans dream. He has 4 cnc machines and all the works. I'm taking my frame there today (it's ZERO degrees out there) with the front end and hoping I can get some guidance from some of these engineers. Bike is stripped down, engine just about completed so it's time to work out some kinks on the frame. Plan on having a mono shock in back if it can be worked out.... nice job your doing..it's addictive!
have a great day!

Re: Cafe/Hot Rod Build 79Gl1000
More updates. The goal is to make the back end look like stock but modified. Was able to use everything including the inner fender.
Narrowed the rear section of the seat for a slimmer look. Once it's recovered the gaps will be closed up, I added sheet metal to chage the profile of the seat to match the rear hoop.
Next steps figure out how to mount the rear of the seat and make a rear light mount/panel. Then hopefully the back end will be done.
