Nice choice on the muffs! Those are going to sound great, we're all hoping to see a video to hear how they sound...

Got some more work done. Disconnecting everything and labeling. Plan on pulling the motor soon.

The temp sending unit, how do I take it off, just pull it?

It is a tight fit because the rubber is 30+ years old but if you can get the edges of the rubber started without tearing it, then it should just pull off. A little WD-40 might help.

How far are you going? I am interested is watching this one progress. If you are pulling the engine, you may want to check the center stand area of the frame for rust and damage. It will be the perfect time to fix that while you have the engine out.

I am stripping it all the way to bare frame, so definitely going to look into that. Good looking out. Thanks.

I am curious to see what you do with the front end. I like the look and feel of the CBR reverse forks. I an looking into seeing how I can do a swap. as of now for good ride and to lower my bike 82 GL1100 I put 1" spacer between the stock springs and slid the uppers 2 inches up the tree with 2" pull back bars. They aren't as low as I want them but looking into that as well.

Picked this up today, complete Hayabusa front end. Now I can start work on everything else with the stance right.

Mods: This build took a different direction than planned. It might be better suited for the Customizing section. Can we move it?

Hayabusa Swap Question

#29

Post by vb_GL1000 »

Been a while, been out of the country and working all summer and now getting some time to work on the bike. Going to be tackling the front end swap here and I have a question. It had roller bearing on the stock GL1000 steering stem and I have a new set of All Balls convervsion roller bearings do I need to remove the races in the neck of the frame? Then I would I assume I would only need to remove the race from the Hayabusa steering stem, which is ball bearing set-up?

This is my first front end swap and the All Balls sets came with a ton of spacers/washers, do I use the drawing of the GL or the Hayabusa front end as a guide?

bearings and races should be considered a matched set once they've been used. even if the all balls rollers have the same angles and other dimensions as the factory ones the fact is the existing race is used. you have all the new parts, remove all the old ones and use the new parts.

getting the lower race out of the frame can be a royal pain as not all the frames have the little access cuts to allow access from above to push them out. once you have the old race out, consider grinding an access cut out in case there is a Next Time
