Re: GL 1100 Cut, weld, wrench then ride
I went to the car show today with my Honda 750 and my Honda trail 90. Had a great time talking bikes with all the hot Rodders. There was no bike class, so no chance for awards. Came away with a lot of great ideas. I told everyone, "you should see the Gold Wing I'm building" Most just shook their heads and gave me some strange expressions.

Don't we know those looks!!
When I mention my hobby is customizing old GoldWings, I just know they are visualizing mudflaps, chrome and lights.

If we can't fix it, we can fix it so no one else can.

Re: GL 1100 Cut, weld, wrench then ride
I got that look the other day as I picked a 1200 motor from a place called the Chop Shop. I'm pretty sure Goldwings get parted out.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: GL 1100 Cut, weld, wrench then ride
I never thought much would said about customizing a Gold Wing. One of the hot Rodders that looked at me funny was a guy that built a custom Studebaker. Go figure.
I did get to borrow some time on a mill today during my lunch break. I cut the flats into the throttle shafts, drilled and tapped for 6-32 allens. I am using butterflys from Suzuki 650 twins (325cc per cylinder) the Goldwing 1100 is around 275 cc per cylinder. My throttle bores may be a little too big for 1100cc but I can always justify boring out the GoldWing engine this way. Does anyone know how big these engines can be bored out?

I mounted the throttle position sensor on my throttle left side throttle body. Took a hack saw and cut a slot in the brass throttle shaft.

Re: GL 1100 Cut, weld, wrench then ride
The Throttle position sensor tells the computer how much throttle the rider has applied. They are all pretty much the same, potentiometers or as the the mechanics call them - throttle pots. Most have a range of adjustment. Most have 3 wires. I hooked up a 5 volt power supply to the red and black wires then a voltmeter to the white wire. At approximate idle position I adjusted the pot to read 1.5 volts and at full throttle it came out about 4.5 volts. Nice for a discarded part from a race team because of too high mileage.

Re: GL 1100 Cut, weld, wrench then ride
I decided it was time to take my gas tank to the painter. I sandblasted it at friends shop. Normally, I would soda blast things like this but it is too cold and rainy outside, also whenever I soda blast my neighbors ask what I'm up to because it looks like smoke coming from my yard.
When I got all the paint off, I found the tank had rusted thru on the left side bottom. It wasn't bad enough to even show thru the paint so I wasn't worried at all while I built the tank. I guess it is only on the kick stand side. The rest of the tank hardly showed any rust inside or out.

Unfortunately now I need to start over with a different tank. I will check this one I bought off EBay last year, a lot closer before I put all the hours in it.

With all the time spent on he tank wouldn't it be wiser the braze the bad spots. Also when I was an auto tech the general idle voltage was .9 most of the ECU's tips voltage range is .9 to 5 maybe with the micro it will accept 1,5 for closed throttle.

Hi Jimmy, I haven't worked with the Microsquirt software yet, if I need to go down to .9 for closed throttle, I have plenty of adjustment.jimmyz3286 wrote:With all the time spent on he tank wouldn't it be wiser the braze the bad spots. Yes I planned to braze up the rust holes as soon as I saw them. I took the tank to a local radiator shop owned by an old timer known as the best motorcycle tank expert in the South for a second opinion. I hopefully could convince him to fix it for me, then seal it. He looked it over tapped his finger nail all over it and told me it's saveable, but will give trouble in a year or two and he won't touch it. He said he used to fix them like this and sometimes worse, not anymore.

Im sure when the old guy did tanks they never thought about sealing them.
I bet you could save it with a por15 tank kit.

I got confined indoors for a few days. Still making progress.
I grabbed some gasket material and I'm doing some GoldWing work while in living room.

Does anyone remember when I said I didn't like the alternator bracket I made? Well, I made a new one today.

Now I'm working on a throttle cable plan.
