Okay... got the bike back together enough to put some gas in and try to start it. Lights come on, but when I hit the button, nothing. Battery is charged, 12.5V, even tried my car battery with jumpers. The headlight dims when I press the button, but the starter does not turn over... not a click, nada. Taking a look at the wiring, it appears the PO "fixed" the bad connector behind the battery by twisting the wires together and wrapping in electrical tape. Lots of frayed and cracked wires, especially the one from the wiring harness to the solenoid. So it looks like I'll be soldering on some new connectors. I'm hoping this is the problem... I had the battery box out to remove the gas tank and I probably cracked some of the frayed wire strands. I'll go ahead and replace the dogbone fuse with a mini-fuse.

I hope the problem can be that simple! Nothing more satisfying than getting the bike moving again!

Ignition from donor bike looks like Prestolite. There is a manual in Shoptalk. There is also wiring diagrams for your solenoid issue. As to the no start issue, it seems it's most often the start button, but can be the ground strap behind the triangular motor mount. It's worth removing the triangular bracket and checking it. Often on the motor side it is corroded badly.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Thanks for the info on the Prestolite ignition!

As for the wiring... these snapped in my hand just came apart when I took the tape off:

Rewired everything to the solenoid and she cranked over! Got her running a bit rough... cylinders 1 and 4 were getting gas but no spark. Checking plugs, coils, wires next.

Forgive the cross-posting...

I previously made some knee grips from neoprene sheets that I purchased online. I was shopping at Harbor Freight and they have the EVA foam "anti-fatigue" floor mats...

http://www.harborfreight.com/4-piece-an ... 94635.html

I liked the textured pattern on them and thought they'd look even better than my first attempt. I made a template from a manila folder and flipped it over for the reverse side. Use a "sharp" snap knife to make clean cuts. I beveled the edges to look more like the vintage Black Bombers knee grips. A little heat from the stove helps smooth out any rough edges and let's you form it to shape. Heat also tends to harden the skin a bit, making it tougher.

You can spray these with PlastiDip to give it an even tougher skin and make them blacker (they are dark gray). Plastidip will seal the foam, then you can spray-bomb over it in another color if you want.

I wonder if a sharp router could cut clean edges? I'll try on a piece of scrap and see if it works... though I know I'll have to move at a good pace to keep it from friction melting the rubber.

I used this stuff to make a Batman Halloween costume last year -- it holds up pretty well  I have a spare set of scratched up side/shelter covers that I plan to "Bat-cessorize" for this year's Halloween!

It's alive! Mhuahahahahahaaaaaaaa!!

New plugs and tested the coils... juicy fat sparks with a jumper wire to ground them to the frame. I got her started with no choke and half-open throttle but she was spewing smoke from the left exhaust... I could tell #4 was flooding and dumping raw fuel through the cylinder... I fumagated the whole neighborhood! I turned the fuel screws in from 2-1/2 turns to 1-1/2 turns and the magic smoke went away. Advanced the timing a couple of mm past the notches and she was purring like a kitten at 900rpm. Crack the throttle and she roars! I still have to balance the carbs with my DIY water manometer, but she sounds great for a bench balance.

Next up I need to "unstick" my front brakes... then I can take her for a spin :)

Thanks! I would think someone could produce these easily with a "hot" cookie cutter or CNC machine. I'm just using double sticky tape to hold mine on.

The bike runs really nice once warmed up -- it just purrrrrrrrs. But it's still flooding #4 at startup and I have fuel trickling out the end of the left header -- maybe a couple of tablespoons of gas until it stops (I need new exhaust gaskets). Once the engine warms up it burns out whatever gas is in the pipes and makes a bit of smoke... but then that burns away and she runs just fine. I'm thinking I have a stuck float or needle not seating... so I'll have to pull the bowl off and check. I hope I can do this in situ... really don't want to pull the whole rack of carbs again.

On that subject... is there a good way to pull the needle seat without damaging it? I had a hard time getting the old ones out and had to replace them all.
