My first chop took a long time to get it together, but here it is finally rolling!!! It has gl1200 in a 77 gl1000 frame, gl1200 steering stem and 85 Magna front forks and wheel. I have to get the wheel shimmed to the right distance and I'll probably just use one disc. I have an 18 inch Lester for the back which I'll probably have to use to keep the 1200 from singing soprano. I don't think I'll do the softail setup this year, as I want to ride it!!!! I was going to do the early gl1000 heads and carbs thing, but ....I want to ride it, so I may just look for a set of 1200 carbs for this summer, because, I want to ride it!!! With the Magna forks it measures 68 inches ctr to ctr of the axles.

These two photos show where I had screwed up. When I initially cut and welded, 2nd pic, I didn't realize the back tire I had on was flat and off the rim. Too tight a quarters in my basement. I finally ran a string line around the back tire and bought a 3 foot threaded rod that I screwed into the ctr of the fork stem and then I could see my front and back tire were not together. The after pic as in after much grunting whining complaining and proper leverage shows that I have it pretty close. No laser frame like the saltflats build, but as best I understand it, that's what has to be plumb to each other.

front and rear tire have to be in almost perfect alignment or the bike will have tracking issues. normally a jig of sorts should be built before the modification starts. but at this point get it as close as you can, and it will have to be ok

it is a little late now, but for future reference make sure the frame is straight before starting mods.
do not get all impressed by a lazer-frame jig-whatever B.S.
all it takes is some patience, creativity and persistance,.
Remember there is nothing straighter than a tight stretched piece of string.
go buy 3 mitutoyo angle finders and a roll of surveyers string.
perhaps your swingarm has a twist rather than the framehead.
pull the swingarm & stick a pipe through there, then put a level on it.

The first picture shows when I was done straightening it. I think it's pretty straight.

Tank is beat to heck. If I don't find another within my budget, I will cut the bottom out and straighten the dents. I think it will go on there then. It seems I remember someone else using one. A gl 1100 shelter looks okay too. My V65 ended up being junk. I'll be selling off the rest. Soon I hope.

Looking promising! FYI, to remove dents from the tank, fill it with water and freeze it....

Lol but these engine's do not respond well to air cooling. Best of luck finding the time to rebuild her, nice look for sure.

Lookin good, I like the forks are they longer then the gl forks? Is that a mounting point for a fork brace at the top of them?

It is a bracket for a fork brace, but the magna triple tree is narrower than the Gl's so one will have to be made. The forks need a total bath, polish and rebuild as does most of the bike. I have the whole summer off as of June1, but I have a kitchen to put in and a couple houses to paint.......dang it.

If you're using the Magna triple tree, go get a superbrace.
Don't drive that bike without that brace!! Magnas had an evil front end wobble when their cast aluminum braces broke. No joke; I own a V65 Magna, and I have a titanium plate under the hollow cast aluminum one.

I will have to make a brace. I will likely raise the tubes in the triples and shorten them a bit on the inside.
