It was a bad plug. Pulls hard to 9k now, but I'm not going to do that very often.

Now, do I trust those copper gaskets? Time for a trip.

The plugs I pulled out were side-gapped. The ones I put in were an old set. (probably only a year on them) They were stock, not side gapped. Both sets were NGK DPR8EA9. The set I put in today were a little sooty when I put them in. I sprayed them with brake cleaner. After twenty miles they looked like new. Maybe a bit too new.

I better read up on side gapping to see what I did wrong there.

I put 35 miles on tonight and it has plenty of giddy up again.

Good to hear it is back up and running! Did you get the new gaskets from the same guy?

Yes, Lani @coppergaskets. I can't find anything I did wrong on side gapping the plugs. I may have dropped them or did something to cause a small crack in the ceramics. Perplexing. Everything I read says side gapping gives a performance boost, but shortens the plug life.

How about indexing? Looking at my plugs today, three are very clean, one is a little tan. The one that's tan and maybe a little bit sooty on the base is the one that doesn't align towards the intake runner. I picked up a few more to try.

The heat on the electrode is a little past the halfway point.

Same answer. You're riding a street bike not a race bike.
One of the big reasons to index plugs is to make sure the ground strap is away from the piston. When tolerances are so close between piston dome and head it is possible to hit the ground strap and push it in or even break it off. No performance gain to be had.

One other reason is to move the ground strap so it is in "front" of the intake charge. With nitrous (especially) or a blower/turbo it is possible for the intake charge to "blow out" the spark. Covering it with the ground strap helps to prevent that.

Looking at the pics on Randakks site or looking at a 1000 head shows the plug is considerably away from the center of the combustion chamber. Side gapping and indexing would put the spark further away. Side gapping and doing the opposite of indexing would move the spark slightly closer. I'm going to stick with just indexing and leaving them alone.

I am surprised also that my side gapped NGK's showed slightly rich and sooty on the base ring are now slightly lean and good on the base ring.

Oddly, the shock mounts on the 1200 swingarm are narrow compared to the 1000 frame. The angle puts outwards pressure on the frame.

I like a lower ride to make it easier to back the bike up, and to mount and dismount. I had two swing arms, a 1200 and a 1500, so I raided them for the shock mounts and welded them up to the current 1200 swingarm on my bike. By putting them to the rear it also moved the lower mounts outward to straighten the shocks. I forgot to take pics along the way, but here's how it looks now. The brake line and rear wiring obscures the view but the shock mount is just surface welded to the swingarm further back.

Looks like I could move the right shock base out a bit more, but it's better than the first pic. My rear tire misses the upper left frame by a fraction of an inch. Wish I could adjust the swingarm right a bit, but the ujoint contacts the swingarm on the inside if I do.

Are you happy with the switch back to dual shocks?

Yes. Ride is better than my monoshock after adding the "links". They made it too stiff.

Updated old missing photo bucket pics in early sections.

Found one video of it going through the gears. Don’t know where the others went.

Did some needed R&R on Schizoid for a while. Replaced the broken centerstand crossmember and beefed up under my seat. I had to adapt the 1200 swingarm a little bit to accommodate a 195/65/16 Falken run flat. I had about 7.6” of space in the swingarm. When the tire came it was all of 8” wide. Gulp! After ten rounds and a fight and a half to put it on the rim, I got it and with it inflated it’s 7” wide, not much wider than my 160/80/16 Avon Venom. The car tire is about 1-1/2” shorter

Rides pretty much like a motorcycle tire. Easier low speed maneuvering, but can lurch a bit on uneven ground.

Okay, Eating crow time and it tastes good. That old idea of filling one of the slide vacuum holes was a great idea for smooth performance at any speed, and getting rid of a few dead zones, but after watching my old video, I decided to try opening it up a little bit again. I went from 3/32” to 1/8” and acceleration was improved. Started to drill to 9/64 and decided to go right to 5/32” and it was better yet. Significantly better.

I’m sure I will still have a flat spot when I make a big downshift with a big rpm jump where the slide comes up faster than the jets can keep up. It will wallow for a few seconds and then take off. But heck, I want that acceleration. When I get home , I’ll probably go back to stock size holes.

With the car tire on the back, it can still spin it on take offs, not as much but definitely noisier.

I have a few pics with the bike laid over. Not much rubber when you lean that far, but as much as a the motorcycle tire.
