Buying new pipes for bike

#1

Post by 79oldwing »

I am considering buying a new exhaust for my 79 gl1000, looking at Jardines and Mac, anyone recommend either one, they both are about same price, new around 500 dollars. My original exhaust is still in very good condition but I get tired messing with the chrome shields on the exhaust.

Are your headers solid? For far less money you can add some custom extensions to your headers, have them welded on and ceramic coated as a pair, then add HD take off mufflers. HD chrome is outstanding, and the take offs go for a song. The back pressure on this type of system is perfect in my opinion.

Sure like that taillight.

You can save a bunch of money going the HD route and end up with a very nice system. But for your question I would pick Jardine five times over MAC. To me there is no comparison in quality. The Jardine chrome is far superior to the MAC and the Header thickness is also different reducing bluing. Now my knowledge is based on roughly 10-15 year old systems and manufacturing process's may have changed since then.

Nothing has changed Whisker.
I have a MAC exhaust and the quality is sub-par. Thin metal and poor polishing so the thin chrome didn't have a chance. They turn blue in a heartbeat and I've given up trying to polish them out.

On the other hand it sounds pretty good and has the look I wanted. I have a muffler setup in mind (aftermarket Harley) but it's big bucks and not a high priority with me. I'll live with the MAC's for a while at least.

Bottom line though is poor quality. HD take-offs are a good value for a quality exhaust.

....and, if you invest some time in that old exhaust of yours, you'll get a pretty penny for it on eBay.

All good info above. I have a set of Jardines on my 1100, 11 years since they where new, and look fine. But I also have some HD's sitting on the shelf

That's a 79 for sure, didn't think that a horseshoe would fit. Obviously it does.

I have the motad stainless steel system on mine and I am looking for an original setup like yours. If yours is all original and in good condition maybe we can work out a trade. Let me know what you think.
