The No Quarter Build
A month or two ago, I spoke of the sources of inspiration. In that flash of mind connections, the song No Quarter had given me a feeling of how I was going to go about this next bike.
As I listened to the song, both on the stereo and in my head, I began to dissect what that song was saying to me. I had visions of Arabian Horsemen, crossing deserts to deliver news that must get through. Horses, leather, Morocco, hand tooling, gold leaf, and so on...
Thus I set about visualizing this project. It has fallen together pretty seamlessly, the front end is basically done, the saddle is finished, and the paint job is ready for 5 coats of clear and endless color sanding.
I have replaced the fan switch with a Geo switch, installed an aftermarket temp gauge, switched in a new thermostat since I had the radiator off, and polished the covers. I removed all the gauges, and built a new bracket for a new headlight. I ground off the triple tree mounts that were formerly used to hold the brake splitter. I will be building some new lines thanks to help from Robin. I will get more pictures up as soon as I can go outside without it raining!! Actually, I still have a lot to do, but the general shape is taking form, and I am happy.
The Shelter has been painted and a border hand painted, inspired by April Lawton's Guitar. (RIP Ms. Lawton) She hand painted a Moroccan/Aztec theme on her guitar way back in about 1973. The border design has stuck in my head for years. Pictures to follow.
The side covers... After bondo filling the emblem holes, and sanding the side covers smooth, I laid a white primer down, then a top coat of Hammered brown. I printed the Zofo design onto stencil paper, and then applied the paper to the cover. I then cut the stencil out and removed the cutouts. I applied a medium beige enamel using a sponge. Small dabs of dark red and creme were then smudged into the beige, and finally, gold was allied loosely around the edges of the stencil. The stencil was quickly removed before the paint had a chance to set up. Next is 5 to 7 coats of clear, with sanding in between to achieve a glass smooth surface. I will do that later this week.
So anyway, enjoy, and I'll be back to update the voyage of this GL1100.

Purdy! One day I'll develop the patience to make glass-smooth panels like that... just no time to sand!

Re: The No Quarter Build
Very cool. I dig the texture of the hammerd brown. It might look cool with a stripe layed down for some contrast. Maybe in a root beer metallic? Or maybe bring that border from the shelter down onto the side covers.

Re: The No Quarter Build
Here is the shelter prior to clear coating. The flash makes the trim paint stand out more than it does in person. The colors are darker and less colorful!
