I dont think it would likely add any strength. The rear frame rails are very stout. In fact I have had to use hydraulics to spread them a 1/2 inch or so in order to fit a custom fender...
I found the end of the internet

sunbobb, yes, the frame im sure is really strong.
problem on my '83i is, the stock fender is held by 2 bolts to the seat base, 2 bolts to the rear frame hole.
a '3rd bolt' in the center of the fender just between the seat and the taillight was bolted to the massive
chrome rails of the trunk rack.
you guys with a shop i'm sure can come up with a number of ways to get around this,
but this was one way and it seems to be working.
i was gonna replace the whole thing with a chrome '82 cb900 setup which appears to have better support to the frame,
but decided
a) to save a few steps
b) that the stock fender didn't have such a bad look once the bike was naked.

in the 1st pic there's a little stainless phillips head bolted to the tab welded onto the hogtail.

setup is a little bit bouncy but not bad, i used the grommetted setup of the cb.
i just had to escape that 'deathstar 9000' look of the gigantor gl taillight.
now it has a cleaner, sort of a throwback look.

HOW DOES THIS relate to the custom sissy forum?

well, i will elaborate in the next post.

this piece looks to be made to be used with a sissy.

HOW DOES THIS TIE INTO CUSTOM SISSY BUILDING?

basically, the thing was meant to use with a hog-style sissy,

it lets you bypass the massive trunk rack or grab rail.

btw, the grab rail in the auction doesnt appear to have an upper loop like others ive seen.
they possibly had several styles? he could have taken more/better pics but this one
appears to be the most useful to a naked builder. . .
theyre still massive imho.

i like what you said about using harley replacement -style sissy setup.
they came in abunch of lenghths and style variations, in many frame widths.
it depended a lot on which YEAR yor hog was, more than which model you had.

you may need a different-width sissy,
depending on how much of the trunk support stuff you want to keep.

and, if you choose not to have fun and build these brackets,
the nice thing is that the 'classic' harley models used straight flat stock for brackets,
with hefty boxed receivers attached.

so, in an auction, you should be able to tell in the pics. . .
bracket will be straight, flat, (no curved surfaces or bends to speak of)
as opposed to some of the newer models with less conventional design,
then you can be a drilling fool and make it work.

can you see a potential problem in my pics? i'm not sure what that seat's from, , ,possibly a 1200?
passenger area of the seat looks wider than what the sissy will want.

i need to find a stock 'beavertail' seat, i think they look nicer anyway.

not to plagiarize, but zryder's delectable fattank bike is a gr8 example of improvising a nice sissy.
(though he used honda shadow, not harley-- there are many options happily)
here it is again.
pleasant dreams of naked machines, all

Interesting. None of my 1100's have had that bracket, I wonder if it was an aspencade part? Have to look this one up!

Petey, does the aluminum stick to the plastic base of the router?
