Mr.H's new look for 2011

#1

Post by Sidecar Bob »

For those who don't already know, Mr.Honda is my '83 'Wing with '79 engine. http://ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=2785

There were a few minor changes over the years like different handlegrips (without the fringes), new mirrors and painting the engine blue (originally cast iron with gray covers) but up to a couple of years ago Mr.H looked pretty much like this.
Image

Then I decided I wanted a sidecar for summer use too (I have had sidecars for winter for decades) so I bought a Dnepr sidecar with an almost new frame and a badly abused body, restored/modified it and Mr.H looked like this (Note that this was taken the day I brought him home from having the top made - the only time I drove this outfit in the snow)
Image

I wanted to paint the bike last spring but a tendon transfer surgery put me out of action from Jan. to Apr. and I didn't want to start taking it apart then because our youngest daughter was scheduled to arrive at her wedding in that sidecar in early June so it had to wait until this year.

So here it is - Mr.H's new look for 2011:

I just had a weird idea, you should try to figure out how make it so you control it from the side car. imagine the looks you would get especially from the cops.

New paint looks nice and love the nostalgic look of that sidecar. If it was me, I would only carry the high trunk when I needed the space.

I usually run without the trunk & the topbox that mounts on the back of the sidecar (not shown) unless we are going camping but I left it on for the pics because of the lettering. I bought the GoldWing + bird stickers from Flipside Graphix on eBay and had him make the gold HONDA logos to match and the silver Dnepr logos (sort of a winged V in a circle) for the sidecar too.

The front & sidecar tires are Duro HF308s, 400-18 on the front and 3.50-18 on the sidecar (on a 'Wing wheel) and the rear is a 5.00-16 Avon Safety Mileage II.

BTW: The paint is gloss black acrylic over Rubberized Rockerguard to provide the bumpy texture with Honda Electron Blue acrylic lacquer for the blue parts. The engine is Duplicolor Cast Coat Iron, the headers are VHT Cast Iron and the rocker covers & timing belt covers are Rustoleum Hammered Black.

There are no lights with filaments on this bike - the headlights are HID and everything else is LED.

I like the look of those tires. Have you run them without the hack? If so, how do they handle? How's the painted rock guard holding up? Is it chipping easy?

I haven't run those tires solo. The Duros should be OK, but the Avon is primarily a sidecar tire so it doesn't have a lot of sidewall tread.

The bike has had the new paint for less than 1500 Km, not enough to tell really. The sidecar has been on the road (and on a lot of dirt/gravel concession roads) in that paint for over 13,000 Km and has had only 1 chip (the spots on the front are bugs - I probably should have washed it before I took the pics  ). Somehow a big truck coming towards me and way too far into my side of the road managed to throw up a stone that hit the right side of the sidecar just behind where the Dnepr logo is. A quick spray of paint and you can't see it. That's one of the reasons I chose to do the rockerguard: they spray the bottom few inches of cars with it and paint over it and it protects from stone chips.

Funny you should say that. We have Amish around here and I often see them out in their buggies. I usually wave to people with unusual vehicles - other bikes, tractors, bicycles set up for touring, horse & buggy, &c. When I was on the winter machine the Amish folks would wave back but when I was on Mr.H (before the sidecar) they would ignore my wave and just look at the road in front of them. Now, with that sidecar, they almost always smile & wave and some of them look genuinely interested in it.

Love that wheel on the sidecar, works most excellent and unusual to match so well. It takes extra work no doubt, but well worth it for asthetic reasons.

The wheel on the sidecar had better match pretty well. Its an '83 'Wing front wheel that I found at the local bike wreckers. I had to change the bearings to suit the sidecar axle, make up a new bearing spacer that is the correct diameter and open up the rings inside the hub that keep the bearing spacer more or less lined up during assembly to make it fit, but that's not difficult.

You've given me the solution of what to do about my wife's trike's running boards. They are getting really scarred up from road debris with big chunks of paint missing wherever a stone has hit it. I'll remove them and use the rubberized coating on the underside of them and probably just paint them a satin black to go with the blue. It'll be easier to touch up with black than with the blue of the trike.

I really like the way you took the blue through out the color scheme. It looks great.
