New member with a 46 year old vintage Wing

Post by DET17 »

Hey there folks, my first post here on NGW.

Just purchased an 8100 mile 1976 LTD which is going to need some serious attention. Probably a nothing special story.... bike was held hostage by the original owners vengeful ex-wife until released in 98 with just 2100 miles. As I purchased it, she has been slumbering in a storage shed for the last 15 years. I am in need of the full set of carbs.... previous owner claims he removed them, took to a HONDA dealer for service and never saw them again. I'm searching eBay for the proper 76 carbs, everything from the heads up to the air cleaner. I'm aware of the full Randakk overhaul of these vintage carbs and will follow those guidelines.

I just sold my 2001 GL1800 which I owned approx. 9 years, so I'm familiar with the modern versions but this GL1000 will be my first vintage Wing. I'm sure this one won't handle like the GL1800 did, but at age 62 I don't need to ride like that anymore.

Looking forward to learning about these early machines. Tips on good rechroming vendors are appreciated!

Welcome to the 'Wingdom.

Proper LTD carbs might be tough to find, may help to post in out 'Wanted' forum, or the usual e bay search might turn up a surprise.

Wish you luck in your search, maybe the Honda dealer still has them :guitar

Email Ken Gray. He and his wife are selling off her late father's (Pistol Pete) inventory. There were over 50 (maybe 100) racks of carbs there, and they know oldwings. They don't want to sell piece-by-piece, but might sell a complete rack. kengray469@hotmail.com

BTW, including your location in your profile will help folks help you.

Thanks to PIDJONES, I've emailed the gent you mentioned to see if he has an appropriate set of carbs for my 76 LTD.

Looks like we might be neighbors! I'm moving to east TN from ATL as soon as I get retired and a bunch of work done.

Merry Xmas to the NGW owners.

Ken Gray hooked me up, as he had the apprpropriate 76 LTD carbset for my bike.

I've spent a small fortune so far on all the missing bits & pieces.... HONDACycleNation in Kallamazoo loves me.

Hope to launch a restoration thread soon in the appropriate section. I've already bought 2 fuel tanks off eBay, both of which had holes rusted in the bottom. Going to look thru Ken's/Pistol Pete's collection to see if they are all equal condition, or if there is a survivor which was properly drained and generally rustfree. My cousin performed the battery charger electrolysis procedure on the first tank, and while we think it is NOW rust free it would need soldered/metal work to seal it.

NO WAY will this antique run by year end.... I'm focusing on the end of 2023 now!

If only pinholes, a POR15 sealer kit should take care of the tank. Just tape over the holes until it sets. But, be prepared to spend about eight hours of your life to do it right. And that is after removing the majority of rust. You will need to come up with a way to keep the normal and reserve lines open while it sets, as well as the filter screens. Blowing air through them for several hours while curing ought to work

i keep hearing how bad kreem is. I used it in my 78 over 20yrs ago. half a million miles on it, and it's stll fine. preping it right might be the answer to a long life.
