Hello NGWers,

I've been the proud owner of a beautiful 77 Gold Wing for a few months now. I just needed to finish to put back my 81 GL500 together before attacking this beast! So far, I haven't done too much but have changed the oil and tried starting it by attaching it to my Toyota Corolla's battery. No spark. Just today, I removed the points cover to realize that they're no longer there. I have some aftermarket ignition. Does anyone know what model this is and where I should go from here? Once I get the engine running, I'll attack other issues like rebuilding both F and R brakes, tightening up wheel spokes and changing F and R tires. Oh and timing belts should be changed. Should be busy for a good while!

Welcome from the east coast.
I would change the belts before you attempt to start it. Check the water pump impeller for lateral movement which indicates it needs to be either rebuilt or replaced.

Hi guys, thanks for the warm welcome and the speedy replies! Here's an update; knowing the identity of the aftermarket ignition (thanks gltriker), I investigated and found it odd that the advance was not turning. I assumed that nothing was making the camshaft turn and then removed the belt covers to realize that yes, the left hand belt was snapped. But, man, what a disgusting mess in there; massive rust, humidity, grime, etc! I've taken some photos and will add them.

So, timing belts, what would be a quick cheap place to get them? or, more realistically, a quick place to get them (are these automotive belts?), because time and money are always inversely proportional aren't they?

Yikes! :shock:

Respectfully speaking, a quick place to get new timing belts is the least of your concerns at this moment.
A broken timing belt generally causes a moving piston- to- open valves contact incident. Bent valve/s.
The timing belt tensioner pulleys need attention. Replace or repair.
Both camshafts' belt pulleys and the crankshaft belt pulleys need TLC.
Camshaft and crankshaft oil seals may need replacements.

Please, remove both cylinder heads' rocker arm cover now. Let's see what it looks like in those closed environments.

Belts are Gates T274. Here in the US, I buy them through Amazon. Sometimes you are lucky to only find a valve bent (they were available, last I looked).

I just had an entire head wiped out by a bit of RTV plugging the oil control orifice. Was able to eBay a complete head that should be in Monday. In the US, parts are still readily available (except those made from unobtainium)

Is it just me or can I open zip files without buying Winzip (refuse to do that). BTW you are able to attach files to your post without using Zip by using Full Editor & Preview when posting to a thread. Would be nice to see your pics. & welcome from Manitoba

Hello forum!

It's been a few months, but with the return of the cold weather, I've found the time and motivation to keep wrenching on this beauty.
Since the left timing belt was broken when I tried cranking it over, I assumed I'd done damage to the pistons or valves. I finally took the head off and neither the piston crowns or valves looked like there had been an impact. I'll paste photos for you to see. One thing, however, is that the cam holder bolts were already loose on the left side. I would assume that was because of cranking it over with no timing belt, but like I said, contact between pistons and valves on the L side is not at first glance visible.
Now, I plan on cleaning the carbon off the piston crowns and cylinders on the L side and on the heads and valves too. Never lapped valves before, but I plan on doing that before reassembly, on both sides. Wondering if I should take the R head off, probably will since I'm already this deep. Thoughts? I found a good video for cleaning carbon off with rags and WD-40; any better tips?
I didn't want to spend too much money on this machine yet, as I still haven't seen it run. I should probably take some of the carb assembly apart to take a look inside. Looks like, at minimum, just to see it run, I'll need:
-new L head gasket + oil passage o-rings
-new timing belts
-new timing belt pulleys
-a lot of time!

Hi and a belated welcome (I just noticed this thread because I don't look in the Introductions section often). Please add your location to your profile so that it will appear below your name.

BTW: Because of spammers this forum doesn't allow new members to start new threads until they have 3 or more posts in this section or as replies to threads in the rest of the forum. I see you now have 4 posts so you can start a build thread if you want (or at least a thread about fixing your engine).

You may have a hard time finding the Gates T274 belts in Canada. I know I never could; Every time I replaced the belts on my 1000 engine I called all the auto parts chains and eventually gave up and bought from Honda except for and the time I bought one of the "New2U" kits that forum member Charlie P used to sell that included T274s. I suspect they were used in some car that wasn't sold here.

I can't help you with the pulleys but it looks like you will need the tensioners too and this might help

Re head gaskets, the procedure is different than you are used to reading about on cx500forum. If you use genuine Honda gaskets (which were still available the last I heard) no sealant or copper spray is necessary and a single re-torque after the first heat cycle is considered adequate

You may find this thread about when I had my "new" engine apart interesting, particularly the part about lapping the valves. I figured out that you can tell if a valve is bent if it only gets shiny on one side when you lap it.

Note that this is the exact opposite of the advice you are used to seeing at cx500forum because the Similar Topics here usually are actually related (although some of them are still very old).

Re zip files: You don't need Winzip of any other 3rd party app to open zip files anymore because Win10 will open them. If you still want a 3rd party zip file program 7zip is free and works well.

And speaking of that, why are you adding your pics as zip files? If you use the full editor you can add them to your message as I have done below
- Click Full Editor & Preview button next to the Submit button,
- Look below the text box and click Attachments, then Add FIles
- Browse to the files on your computer and select the ones you want to upload
- Click on the place in the text box where you want the pic to appear and then click Place Inline next to the pic you want to be there (you won't see the actual pic until you either Submit or Preview the message).

Thanks Bob for your extensive reply! I've started a build thread called "Western Canada 77 GL1000". I know the pics as zip files were making it hard for others to get engaged with these posts, so I found how to place pics inline yesterday. I'm working with a Google Chromebook and I don't always find this thing all that intutitive; definitely a different procedure than the Acer I use for work with Windows and everything.

I looked at your thread on head gaskets; you've got me thinking that I should just order Honda ones. Sounds easier and hopefully I'll have success the first time as they're not inexpensive. At least I can get them soon and fire this thing up as I'll soon be on holidays and will have more time to spend in the garage.

Your head gasket change was just last summer; how many km have you put on them and are they still doing good?
