Post by gfarnworth »

Hi,
Thanks for the acceptance. I am based in Somerset in the UK.
I have just bought a GL1000 to use as my main ride, if the summer arrives.
I do have a little problem with the bike not starting and fuel flooding No1, and leaking all over the engine!, I have taken the air box off and there is fuel in the floor of the air chamber.
The guy I bought it off had the carbs re done early 2019 and then did not ride for 8 or so months. I am thinking float bowls need looking into, any other thought ?

Thanks
Gary

Welcome from Wisconsin, USA. We've had several new members from the UK. Recently!
As for the fuel issue, there are a couple things that could be the cause. Fuel on the plenum (air chamber) floor can come from a stuck float, a leaking plenum seal, or leaking o-ring(s) between the carb(s) and plenum.
Here's a link to a good test for finding the problem... viewtopic.php?f=1&t=70286
A word of caution: leaking fuel can easily find its way into one or more cylinders and cause hydrolock, potentially damaging the engine. I suggest checking the oil level to make sure it hasn't been fuel contaminated, then pull the spark plugs and WITH THE KILL SWITCH OFF crank the engine over a few rotations to clear any possible fuel build-up in the cylinders. If there is fuel in the cylinders it will spurt out with considerable force, so it's best to do it outside, as it will make a mess. Kill switch off, as we don't want any spark or open flame!

Welcome to NGW.... if fuel has contaminated the oil, and oil change would be in order.... and if you do not know when they were done, change the timing belts

one other thing that can cause a leak is a bad shut off valve in the carb itself

Welcome to the club, great to have another Brit on board, I live near Cambridge. All the help you need can be found here, and I agree with rcmatt007 about changing the belts.
