Newbie with a barn find

#1

Post by Oldenough »

Frequently over the years I have been a bit envious of people that have found a neat old “barn find “ motorcycle. I have purchased and restored a few old motorcycles in the past ( couple ct70s, 1964 Honda Dream 305, a ct90 in my shed waiting ) . I have boughten these projects from others that “found them”.
I have been eyeing old gl1000s for some time thinking it would be a great ride , even so far as touring on it. ( I’ve had a plethora of bikes including a gl1500). But I wanted to find my own “ barn find” and bring it back to life. Cruising the net for some time finding many gl1000 but they were always somebody else’s half done pipe dream or they have already been restored or partial restoration.
A couple months ago a co worker mention to me he saw this old goldwing , yellow, (could’ve only been a 1976)in the back of this heated building . I tracked down the owner and made contact and he was more then willing to sell it. His wife wanted it gone . This took a couple of months . It’s been in heated storage and hasn’t seen the light of day for 34ish years, last licensed in 1985 by its owner that was #2.

The original owner #1 was a Dr that passed sometime ago , he lived two blocks from me, I did some work with him years ago when I first moved into town ( I work in health care ) , ( sold long before I moved into town ), my son had him on his paper route .

I asked a local mechanic ( factory trained goldwing mechanic) that owns his own power sports store that specializes in goldwing maintenance for advice. He remembers working on the bike when it was purchased and doing maintenance on it back in the 70s when he was just starting out.

Other crazy thing, the storage building it’s been sitting in for the last 34years is only about 2 miles away. An old roller rink and pizza place which I drive by frequently. It’s been waiting for me for 34 years .

You're welcome, but the real thanks goes to the people who did the hard work of putting those threads together, lol!

Beautiful find and just around the corner. I am jealous but agree on your initial thoughts of a yellow bike, now I would sell my soul for one just like you found.

Update, got a couple hours to look at it before I left on vacation, motors stuck. Don’t know if it a valve or piston/rings. Dumped some pb blaster and mystery oil done the cylinders. We’ll see what it’s like in a couple weeks

Update .. finally got the motor free. 3 weeks of acetone and tranny fluid. Carbs out to pistol Pete’s son. Gas tank out ( what a pain). Now to de rust it. Picked up a low mileage 75 motor just in case mine is to far gone. Next will Check compression and do a leak down.
