possible first restore project thoughts please

#1

Post by Mikeybc154 »

I'm looking at picking up a 1975 and a 1976 gl1000 with an extra 75 motor that turns for about $500 worth of tools i don't need in trade. This will be my first bike restoration. I've done trucks and cars in the past and am very mechanically apt. wondering if you experienced guys around here think it seems like a solid deal. the 75 will be the resto candidate it only has surface rust nothing major, the frame is in good shape no cracks or bends and the original paint is actually in good condition aside from 1 chip. sorry if this is not a proper question for this forum. just trying to get some advice and i'll venture to guess if i do pick em up i'll almost live on this site for the next year lol. thanks in advance

Go for it! Lots of help on this forum.
Shop talk is the best. This site was a huge help to me as a MC novice, so you'll do just fine. Best of luck and welcome.

Think I'm gonna go for it, I'll check vin numbers to make sure everything is what its said to be and if thats the case I'll start a thread once i get em home and can start digging in. Thanks for the input everyone, it seems I came to the right place to get a definite yes. I'll have to bust out the camera, since I'm probably the only 30 year old who doesn't carry a cell phone or have social media lol.

Good choice to check and get started. $500 is easy money to start the project. I am new to GWs, but I have restored many motorcycles, which were bought for more, and the therapy of restoration is priceless. Can’t wait to read your resto thread.

For me, it is a hobby, entertainment, and passion. I take one task at a time, and if it stalls either pick another task or take a break. You will find parts that seem to be made of unobtainium (stock seats, rear grab bars, left side covers), and there are reasons for it. Patience in your searching helps lower costs. My primary tool is (somewhere) between my ears, but to give it leverage I've found the internet very important. Buy a set of JIS screwdrivers or bits before you take anything apart. The FSM is available in pdf form online, as well as many other official and unofficial documents.
