1st time owner '80 GL1100
Thanks for letting join. I recently bought a 1980 Goldwing GL1100 with 18k original miles for $800. Yes, it has been sitting, but I'm unsure exactly how long. What I was told, the original owner from Oregon, was elderly man(more than I am) and he didn't ride much. Sold it to a friend of mine here in Washington State, but he never transferred the title. He rode it a little and let it sit outside all winter with a tarp over it. And that's how I happened across the bike. It was sitting under a tarp off to the side hoping someone would take it home and love and care for it.
My very first motorcycle, I was a wee lad of 16 years, bought a 1960 Harley Davidson...... 50cc. 3-speed handle bar shift on the left side. It came with a street set up and a trail set up which included knobby tires and trail sprocket. I joined the service, gave it to my little brother and that was the last time I ever saw it.
Since then I've owned various sizes of bikes and ridden others from my friends. But now I'm a proud owner of a GW.
When I had the owner start it, it had a dead battery. He replaced the battery but had trouble starting it. I opened the gas tank and that smelly rotten egg varnish hit me, I knew I wasn't going anywhere soon.
I have worked as a small engine mechanic for years, repair lawn mowers big and small. So the smelly gas isn't anything new to me. So instead of a little 36 inch mower I now have a four cylinder, four carb, 650 lb toy to fix. I brought it home, put it up on the center stand, and the clouds decided it was time to rain for the next two weeks. I threw a tarp on it, told my GW that I would be back. I did start it up and run it a little bit. It backed fired some and I had to keep it rev'd up to run. So I know it's not completely dead. I've been reading the forums from the Gold Wing Docs, and now from here too. I can't get it in my garage at the moment. I don't have a big door to bring it in, umm it's complicated. So I will be doing all my work outside. But good weather is coming!
I will share some pictures soon.

Re: 1st time owner '80 GL1100
Welcome from Wisconsin! I'm kind of partial to the 1100's, myself (I have several in various states of, um, repair?!?). I also do 90% of my wrenching outside, as I have only a garden shed and a work area in the basement for my projects. Enjoy the ride!

Re: 1st time owner '80 GL1100
Welcome to the club from the UK.
I also have a 1980 GL1100 which has tested my patience to the limit, but almost there now.
+1 on changing the belts asap, then sounds like you'll need to clean the tank and overhaul the carbs. Any questions you have just ask and someone will answer, I know I wouldn't have got my bike running without help from the guys here.
Look forward to seeing some photos when you can.
