Greeting From Mississippi
Newbie here. I am working on a 1975 GL1000 that I bought last fall as a project bike. It is a great machine and I have not found any bad surprises to this point. As far as I can tell it is all original except for the rear shocks. I have had it apart and cleaned the gas tank. It was a mess. The inline filter looked like it was full of coal dust. All done and back together. Now I start the detail work. It will fire but runs terrible. Gas blowing out the right side of the exhaust so I think either 1 or 3 is not firing correctly. Some work to do but that is why I bought it. I have read a lot of the posts here and at GoldwingDocs about the old Wings. I have ideas for what I need to do and want to ask for a critique of the task list and y'all to give me some idea of the order I should do the work. My intent is to get the bike ready to ride with anything I need to do mechanically or electrical but keep the appearance as is. There is some rust but the paint is OK and there are no dents or bends I can find. I like how it looks.
The task list includes but this is not necessarily the complete list:
1. Replace timing belts.
2. Look at the water pump.
3. Replace the coolant and clean radiator.
4. Points look good but will set them to 0.016
5. Perform the split timing procidure.
6. Adjust the valves.
7. Check plugs and wires, etc.
I have already changed the oil.
After those tasks about I want to see how it runs. I am pretty sure I will need to at least clean and sync the carbs. According to the maintenance records I have they have never been touched.
The original owner must have been an engineer. I have records he did that includes every penny he spent on the bike, the original invoice, including every time he put gas in the bike. Excited to have all that.
If you can add anything I need to do as a start and give me some idea of the order to do the work it would be greatly appreciated.
