Lurking and learning for over just over a year now.

Post by Boxer4 »

Hello all, I have been visiting this site for just over a year. I have an 82 GL1100 that I have turned into a Cafe Racer. It hadn’t run in nine years but only has 24,000 miles on it. What I’ve done to date, rebuilt carbs, lapped valves and done valve seals, rebuilt brakes ( master cylinders, calipers, stainless brake lines ). Progressive front fork springs, timing belts, tires, clubman bars, loads of aluminum polishing, a modified seat off a Ducati Monster, flushed cooling system. There is a bunch of other stuff but I’ve pretty much gone through the bike from end to end. I love the bike and it performs flawlessly. A smart guy would probably leave things alone but I’ve never been accused of being a smart guy, over our long cold Canadian winter I am converting it to a dual Weber idf 40 setup. I love all motorcycles and also have a 01 Harley Road King that I completely redid the top end on last year. I’ve already learned a lot visiting here and appreciate the wisdom of the many members. I will post some pictures if I can figure out how to do that, but meantime I thought I would at least say HELLO.

Thanks 5 speed. That worked. Here are the carbs I am going to use. Weber Idf 40's, they have never been run. Unfortunately they dont have the main jets, emulsion tubes, air correctors and emulsion tube holders. I hope to find someone here who has done this conversion to be able to pick their brain on sizing for these parts.

Your bike looks really slick. Can't help with the carbs, although a lot seem to go for a single carb set up if they want to bin the originals. Hopefully someone else can advise to duel carbs.

Previous Rides,
1980 CB250N Good to learn on
1981 CX500 good mid range tourer, went to Austria on it!
1983 GL1100C Pride and joy, sold when I bought my 1st house, big mistake
1985 GL650 Silverwing another mistake, horrible bike
1986 CBX550 Good commuter
1989 Suzuki GS750 (1976) cheap and cheerful until a dog ran out in front of me on Xmas Eve, 1991
Current bikes
2010 CB1300 back on a bike after 19 years, two divorces, children grown up etc
1980 GL1100 NOW ON THE ROAD, still use CB1300.

Thanks! The bike is running awesome with the carbs I rebuilt. It's more than anything the look of the dual Webers I like, although I hope performance won't be sacrificed.

Yep. You belong here. Bike is beautiful, running great and you're tearing it down to make changes.
