Hello. New ‘78 owner

#1

Post by Petros2r »

Hello from Dallas, TX.
Just got this ‘78 GL1000 to rebuild and enjoy.
I’ve had experience in the past with cb550 and cb400a (hondamatic), that I fully rebuilt.
This shouldn’t be much harder;-)
I already got the manual and a few bits and pieces..
It has a single carb conversion that I’m kinda worry about. Carb has no markings, so not sure if the brand. Hopefully it runs with it after I correct the melted R/R connectors, rusty fuel tank and pump, battery and some other minor things. Belts are on order.
Cosmetics will be sorted after the bike runs.

Welcome to the club. A lot of these bikes have been converted to the single carb set up and love it. Good luck...

I like 78's. The single carb conversion can be made to run OK (I'm not a big fan). The manifold design seems to be critical. These are a bit more complicated than the others you've rebuilt, but it's still just wrenching and problem solving.

For what it's worth I go for Yuasa, but sure others will have their own preferences.

Welcome to the forum. I'm partial to the 78's myself and have one I'm finishing up.

Personally, I prefer Big Crank AGM batteries from Batterymart.com.

Let us know if/when we can help.

I am running an AGM battery in mine... bought it off Amazon. Going strong on its 4th year still.

Single carbs... well at least you only have one carb to clean this way. Might not be the highest performance, but it will get you on the road the easiest.

Rusty tank... hopefully you can clean it in-situ using Evaporust or similar. I have used The Works toilet bowl cleaner and a toilet brush with great success... and it's cheap. Otherwise you have to remove the tank, which requires removing the rear wheel, drive shaft, etc. Big job.
