Post by Airhead »

Just wanted to say hey... new here, just picked up my first Goldwing today..w00t!!! Ha, and almost dropped it twice.....duuude they are really heavy : ) Coming off the trailer today was really sketchy, and using the center-stand for the first time was educational, luckily I had the kickstand out also.

I just started going through many of the posts on this site...lots of really good information. I look forward to learning a lot, and also sharing what works or didn't as I transform my Aspencade.

Thanks and have a good one.

Hey Cyborg, I really love the boxer/GL horizontally opposed motors and want it to be the showcase of the bike. The plan is a naked-ish bobber for commuting and light camping. I enjoy tinkering in the garage an am working on my metal working and fabrication skills.
BTW, did you create the cowl in your avatar, it looks awesome

Hey Track T....
Sounds like you have a good plan. The fairing in my avatar is a modified CBX fairing. I did the modifications. I also enjoy tinkering in the shop

Welcome Beemer guy. Just another horizontal expression, huh?

Anyway, you probably picked one of the toughest models to "bob". You'll have a few challenges, but it could be killer when you're done.

Challenge #1) The digital instrument cluster will have to go. Replacements will probably need new senders, as well.

Challenge #2) The harness on that beast after you've pulled all the stuff off, will be a real rat's nest. (Radio, CB, Volume Control Module, Compressor, etc.)

Challenge #3) The 1200 dressers have side shelters that are molded to "flow" into the fairing. Success in filling that gap or replacing the side shelters will depend heavily on your skills and/or creativity.

You may find a few other surprises, but I think these are the big ones. The good news is that big ole stripped and naked 1200's do look good.

Hey desertrefuge,

Thanks for the great info. Yeah, it will be great when done, but like you said..lots of challenges. I plan on doing a total rewire, upgrading electronics, suspension and brakes..etc.. I was actually going to try and fab a cylindrical metal fuel tank, opening up the view and hiding most of the wiring. Good thing is, I'm not in a hurry.

As I replace or upgrade the original components, I'll try to offer them up to any folks on the forum who may need them. Ha, I am probably going to spend way to much on this bike...but it will be fun. And the garage just got a new refrigerator...so now cold beer too!!

Hey there from North Carolina! Got myself a new garage and decided I wanted to explore working on motorcycles. Picked up a 82 GL1100 Interstate that was a rider that needed some additional tlc. I decided the other day to go naked, since it will just be me riding her. It’s been fun, educational, and costly thus far. Good Luck with your project.

I guess my list of vehicles is a bit misleading.
I don't own the tank but spent several years working on it in my spare time. For awhile it was my baby.
Best of luck on your project.
