New to the GL1000

#1

Post by pjlogue »

Wanted to introduce myself and say hello. I just purchased a '76 GL1000 LTD and wanted to join the forum to gain knowledge and perhaps help others. I have been riding for ~45 years. I currently have a '76 CB750K which I bought new and recently restored it. The GL is my next project. It's in good shape for the most part. My list of things to do are rebuild brakes, recondition all electrical connections, rebuild the carbs, change the timing belts and do a full tune up.

Any suggestions or tips as to what to look for would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
-P.

Sounds familiar...

When i returned to riding as an adult, my first bike was a $300 ‘77 cb750k that i restored with the help of sohc4

I then moved up to a $400 ‘82 aspencade in boxes which i built thanks to ngw.

There is sooooo much great info and knowledge here and lots of really cool people , too.

Welcome!

Thanks for the welcomes. Since the bike I just bought is "unknown history" I'm going through it with a fine tooth comb. Brakes, electrical and suspension are a high priority for safety reasons. When I restored my K6 after it had been mostly unused for 30 years I discovered many items that made chills run down my spine thinking of what might have happened if I just got it running and hopped on.

I have begun to tear down the front and rear brakes and they are in real bad shape. Gelled old fluid and rotten rubber. After the brakes I'll replace steering, wheel and swing arm bearings.

If you are already in to the timing belts, you might consider taking off the front transmission cover and even replacing the water pump. there are some O- rings and seals behind that cover that separate water from oil. My '76 has JIS [Japanese pattern Phillips] head screws that would not come out until Deep Creep was applied to them every day for 6 days
