First motorcycle: 75 gl1000 (oops...77)

Post by Tony Raine »

Hello, I'm Tony and this is my first motorcycle. Been sitting indoors for a couple years, but most of it is still there. No key unfortunately, currently researching how to solve that problem.

I work at Arkansas State University, I'm the "shop guy" for the College of Engineering. Also a Master Plumber, hp boiler operator, and test/repair backflow preventers. I probably didnt need another project, haha, but i couldn't resist.

Some of my other projects:
-84 Ford Bronco II: '94 5.0, '79 F150 axles, its the platypus
-80 Mustang
-01 honda rancher 4x4
-old yamaha 3 wheeler
-70's suzuki TC125 "prospector": technically my first bike, but i only bought it to use off road.
-and i turned an old mantis tiller, kids bike frame, some lawmower parts, and some pieces from a home gym into a mini-chopper-trike thing.

I'll be reading through tech articles for a while, got a lot to learn. Probably start a build thread when i have some progress to show (not just unbolting what i dont want, haha)

Keys can be made with a quick turn around from Roncar. I think he’s in shoptalk or in the for sale forum.

Number one on the list is belts. If the PO can’t/didn’t tell you their age, replace them.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
77 WING, 1200 engine with 77 heads, cams, gl1100 foot pegs, Magna V65 front end, 764A carbs, [-gone Suzuki M109 monoshock--, replaced with gl1100 shocks] gl 1200 swing arm, gl1500 final drive, wheel and rear brakes Valkyrie seat, Meanstreak tank, Sportster pipes, Power Arc ignition off crank.

Thank you! And i have been reading through that post for the past couple days anim-cheers1

belts were the first thing the previous owner said to change. I will not overlook that.

Mix and match? What stands out as being different? Like all of my projects, i like to know every bolt. And i love changing things, i cant have a stock anything. One thing that caught my eye on this site was the single carb conversion. Right now i am searching to see if my holley 350 2 barrel is a feasable swap. And of course whole key problem

And for yall's amusement, here is the mini-chopper-trike-thing

You are beginning with one of the most sought after Goldwing's as far as the collector is concerned (I believe). I will be very surprised if someone doesn't try to talk you out of it as a mod-bike. The members here will be agreeable with your choice, regardless. I really good group of learned addicts. You seem to have a depth well-plumbed. Those backflow specialists require special training and certification, at least here in Tennessee. Enjoy yourself. Looking forward to your ideas.

Wow that looks like a treasure trove in the first picture. What else is in that shed?
Welcome to the forum. You have an interesting bike there, certainly somewhat of a mixture.
Are you sure it is a '75? The gauges including the fuel gauge are from a '77 I reckon.

The 350 size Holley is probably a bit big but some have used a Weber 2 barrel and a Holley Weber licensed version. Quite a few have been happy with a 30/26 version or 32/30 version found on many Ford and GM small engines from the 70’s and early 80’s. HOTT has success with a 32/36 Weber. Many who do have success use a 2 to 1 barrel adapter for Weber’s as HOTT shows in his build of Here’s ‘Ol Sparky.

The 75 stock carb setup is said to be the best when in good order. Octane’s rebuild in Shoptalk covers it well. Getting Randakks kit with a video is hard to beat as well. The catch is whether your current carbs are in decent shape to be rebuildable. There are lots of cheap carb kits out there, but many are junk. Roncar has a post in Shoptalk comparing a few.

Well, maybe mix -n- match is too strong a description, lol... The seat is from an 1100, and as mentioned above the gauges are later year as well. Mufflers, floor boards, and heel - toe shifter, and paint etc. Obviously, a previous owner made it their own, just like you're probably going to. Nothing wrong with that, you just have to be sure of the year of the parts you're ordering, like brake components, etc, because there are differences.
